Cable Cleanup
Im riding a Trek 1.1 and as I learn more about cycling and find and see new things there are alterations i want to make to my bike and the main thing i want to do right now is make the cables running from the shifters/brakes because right now it just looks like a mess of cables that were just thrown on there. Now i saw some sort of instructions on the Velominati website which state "the rules" though my bike is quite a bit different where the cables do not run on top of the top tube. How should i go about doing making the cables look much cleaner? Do I need the newer double tap type shifters?

New shifters from just about anyone route the cables under the tape. I've seen people actually loop older Shimano from the side of the shifter and back under the tape but it looks weird to me. All SRAM and Campy route under the tape as do 105 and better Shimano.

You could cross the shift cables under the down tube... but it depends on your frame. Also, make sure your cables aren't too long.

OMG CROSSING CABLES IS EVIL. and also effective...

ask SB of course: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/cables.html
it starts by telling you about cables, but about 1/4 down it goes into actually routing them. |

A solvent-based cleaner to a cable wire and cable products used to remove dust or other contaminants. The insulation for cleaning corrosion protective coating at least that can eat through the inner wire damage helps.
