Upgraditis - what would you do?
I have a 2009 scattante CFR Race - Carbon frame w/ mostly 6600 Ultegra group. I'm in between sizes on it and running at 58 CM with a 90 cm stem. I would benefit from an 80 stem or a seatpost with less setback. Both those are less than ideal ways to improve the fit. However, it does fit decently, and It's still in great condition, but I have a severe case of upgraditis.....What would you do with the following options:
2010 BMC SL01 Street Racer (alum & carbon) w/ Rival from Competitve Cyclist - $1,699 2010 Ridley Compact (alum) w/ Rival from Competitive Cyclist - $1,499 2010 Krestrel RT-800 (carbon) w/ 105- Online- $1,600 USED 2009 BMC SLT-01 Team Machine (Carbon and Alum Lugs) w/ Force - Online - around $1,650 USED 2010 BMC SLC-01 Pro Machine (Carbon) Frameset ONLY - Online - maybe $1,000 OR Forget about a new bike Used products have no warranty. New Products do. I could keep my Scattante in addition to new bike, or try to sell it or part it out. I LOVE the way the BMC & Kestrel frames look, but would they ride that much better? Help. By the way. No racing yet, mostly 25-60 mile group rides. I'd consider racing in the next year or two though. |
Buy wheels!
That said, if I were buying a bike, I'd go with a new frame at least, just due to warranty. Incidentally, I absolutely love my BMC. |
that bmc is a LOT of bike for the money... one of the best deals out there imho... which is why it currently leads on my list...

which BMC? The SL01 from Comp Cyclist?
|
Here's what I would do:
Forget the new bike. Your bike is fine, and you like it. Go get a different color bar tape and re-tape your bars. Instant "new" bike that only cost you $10, and you just saved $1000+. Then you can buy a new pair of shorts, or a long sleeve jersey for winter and say that you bought it with all that money you saved on the bike. It's WIN WIN. |
I have had in the past 2 years ,a Pinarello Paris, BMC Pro Machine, BMC Road Racer, Lynskey Ti 320, Trek Madone 5.2 and a Specialized Roubiax...My choice if I had to keep just one...BMC Road Racer. It just FITS and rides every bit as well as the others..

WHOOOSSHHH... , How did the BMC Pro Machine SLC01 compare to the Road Racer SL01?
From pictures, the red BMC Pro Machine is about the best looking frame I've ever seen. I could always buy the used SLC frameset (used carbon is somewhat scary though) and build it up slowly. Maybe use some parts from the Scattante.... |
