They are still not included on sites selling cheap bikes. I resumed cycling in 2016 after a quarter century hiatus, so I had got used to looking at stack, reach, and effective top tube.

Last summer's pandemic project. Wanted to build up a bike from scratch, and ended up with this.

With Michelin Endurance Pro4 tires, she's almost 18lbs on the dot, which is more than 2.5lbs less than her Lynskey stablemate (Ultegra with discs, fwiw).

Finished her last September, just in time for the weather to start turning nippy, so put her on the trainer in the basement, and only took her outside a few weeks ago. Second ride of the season and I make a PR around Central Park. Not bad, not bad.

Amazing! Comes with the Thomson seatpost too. And $75 less than I paid for mine!! (though mine was a full bike I guess). Gotta love that color scheme too. Congrats on that mega score.

Nope, BSA68, actually. I had to do some double checking across the internets to confirm that the seller was indeed correct before I pulled the trigger. Apparently, disc frames of that era were BB30, but the entry level rim brake frames were BSA. I believe this color scheme was originally a Sora equipped frame, so can't get much more entry level within C'dale's lineup. Still, the frame came in at under 3lbs, so not complaining there!

Thank you! Your CAAD4 project bike inspired me to start one too. I hope (and need) to get a few pointers from you.

And thank you for linking the old catalog. I compared the [a] Horizontal Top Tube Length, [b] Standover at Top Tube Midpoint, [c] Seat Tube Angle, and [d] Bottom Bracket Height for the CAAD4 against those of my current Cannondale Synapse carbon to confirm that size 54 should fit me. The first number is 9 mm higher, so only a slightly increased risk to the family jewels in case of abrupt dismounts.

Is that a super duper seat post? I am not sure if I can even use it because of the kink. The CAAD4 has a much longer seat tube than my current bike, so I expect to have much less exposed seat post.

At least I did not have to search for 2.5 years! It was posted on 5/16/2022 and garnered a bit of interest overnight so I had to make a relatively quick decision. It was shipped today and I hope that it looks as clean as yours.

Yes, Thomson seatposts are muy bueno. The reason I searched for this era of CAAD frames is because of the horizontal top tubes - I love that classic geometry and frame aesthetic. I'm not a fan of sloping top tubes. Plus it has the usual round tubing, and just lovely colorways. Because of this, unless you're long-legged, you will have less seatpost exposed. If you look at how much I had showing on the pic I posted of my R300, you'll see it's not a lot. In fact, the old seat posts were very short in length, as compared to today's which are sometimes 300mm or more. Of course they say more seatpost = more compliance because more post to absorb shocks, but whatever.

I actually just put mine in - and yes I pushed it in quite a ways. I originally had it for a 2016 Spec Roubaix, which did have a slopier tube and more post exposed, but that frame cracked so that bike is gone, and since this will be my new road bike, i'm using it here. I bought the setback version for the Roubaix, hopefully it doesn't cause a reach issue here. If so, I'll sell it and buy a straight one I guess.

Man, so I’m realizing that I never posted any pics of my old CAADs from back in the day.

First up is my CAAD8–I loved this thing. I won my first race on it and had it for 8 years, from 2006 to 2014 before it cracked. Such a great handling bike. Cannondale warrantied it too, which was awesome.



Next up is my CAAD10–I never really bonded with this bike for some reason. The geometry was identical on paper to my CAAD8, but it always felt too big. I played with endless combinations of stems, saddles and seat posts, but I never really got it right and sold it a couple years after.

In hindsight, I think the issue was that my riding style changed a lot shortly after I got the warranty CAAD10, my job really switched into high gear and I was riding more for stress relief than to train, so the long top tube combined with a 120mm stem was not as welcomed. With a shorter stem, the front wheel felt waaay out in front of me.

I also tried shorter cranks when I went to the CAAD10, and they messed up the fit more than I thought it would. I should’ve stuck with the 175s I’d been riding since 2002. Ah well 20/20 hindsight.

Maybe I’ll get another CAAD10 some day.

My question is, what's she riding? Is it a CAAD? The round tubes, decals and paintjob look like my CAAD10 or a Synapse from that era, but does she have some disc brake after-kit?
