The Cult of CAAD...

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

As you can probably tell by the size of my bike, I'm a small guy; 5'7" at ~130lb, give or take a few on either end. While I didn't get blown around, it definitely took more effort (both physical and mental) than usual to keep myself in a straight line. I'm sure I'd get used to it if I rode deep wheels more often, but I was more tired after this morning than I usually am with this ride/group.

The weight and depth of the clincher rim also meant that it took more effort than usual to get them up to speed and keep them spinning than I'm used to with my shallow C24s, which is why I'd go tubular if I ever decide to get my own pair.

I didn't want to gain weight for what I was willing to spend right now on carbon clinchers,
but wanted as deep as I could get. I currently have Ksyrium Elites on my CAAD9 (1550g).

I definitely didn't want to add weight to my bike with the wheelset after I struggled to get it to the 15lb range. The original set I was going to purchase came in at 1480g, but for an additional 50g, I got a build that would handle my weight (200+lbs) much better. Small price to pay IMO. In the end, I managed to get 58's in a lighter package than my Ksyriums (when they arrive).

On my next bike, I will be going for a set of bling 58's (1200g Enves or Mavics on in my crosshairs so far). But, that's when I've actually accomplished something in my life (they'll be a reward to myself).

Saw that, thanks. Would like to get one with a fork, and the shipping seems a touch high.

Pics or it didn't happen!

CAAD 10 105 compact 50/34 with 12-27 Cassette. I originally wanted a standard 53/39 but the LBS tried to talk me into the compact. So far no big deals as there are quite a few hills in my neck of the woods and this is my first road bike so building up stamina.

Will changing to a 11-26 cassette give me a little more on the top end?

My only issue has been with the seatpost so I slapped a cover on it. What do others think of the Kaapa saddle...is that a decent saddles or would I notice a difference on a different/better type of saddle (I don't wear biker shorts but I might start)?

Also 2ndGen how far would you go in upgrading the CAAD 10? Would you consider slapping on an expensive build kit like SRAM RED or Dura Ace on the CAAD10 frame or buy a new bike all together. Eventually as time goes on I plan on upgrading some components.

So far the rides have been awesome. I logged in 125 miles in my first week. I'm in absolute heaven!

Thanks tagaproject, I just bought some and give it a try.

Also is anyone running FSA wing pro compacts or have had any experience with them?

@Infinitedreams: The first thing I would do to that bike is the saddle. Those gel padded covers are bad for you on longer rides, get a better saddle and some riding shorts.

I have that same CAAD, the upgrades I'm planning first are wheels (with some tires) and crankset.

And yes, very upgradeable frame.

For me, with a compact crank, the 11-25 cassette works perfect for hilly areas. If you do a lot of descending, it's pretty easy to spin out a 50x12. However, I would keep riding though, and as you get stronger and want to upgrade some things, get that new cassette.

This for sure. I hate the fact that Cannondale has so willingly adopted the use of FSA cranksets. I've never been happy with FSA's shifting quality, especially compared to Shimano which may be the best shifting crank on the market. I guess it's part of the deal with BB30 standard now since Shimano isn't on board with BB30.

First of all, well done!

And, to answer your question, F yeah I'd slap on the best bits to a CAAD10 frameset.
You can always take those upgrades to your next bike.
Actually, that's how I started out with my CAAD9.

I thought that I was going to upgrade it then transfer everything over to a carbon frameset.
Didn't work out that way. I simply fell in love with my 9 and she's going to stay exactly as she is.

Wheels, Cockpit, upgrade the heck out of your 10 as your budget and priorities dictate.
There will be a few components that you might not be able to transfer over like the seat post
or the front derailleur.

Just to get you started...Full Dura Ace 7800 w/Ultegra SL crank, Ultralight CNC brakes,
Fizik cockpit, Edge 1.0 fork, Dura Ace 7900 pedals & Ksyrium Elites at 15.65lbs.

Thanks for the feedback guys (Alpha_Bravo,Shuagster,2ndGen)!

I'm all ears on suggestions for the saddle? What's a good saddle that I can buy which will last me a good number of years?

I haven't spun out on my compact but I haven't pushed it really hard downhill yet. Top speed so far was 38 MPH but that was with a backpack on with some decent weight 25 lbs give or take.

I'm wiping down my CAAD 10 after every ride like it was a porche/ferrari! It's absolutely night and day difference from the other 2 bikes I was riding the past year and half. As my mom would say "A little piece of heaven on earth!"...

For the saddle check out your LBS to see if they have a demo program. Fizik and Specialized are the most popular brands for saddles.

(Awesome bike ain't it )

Saddles are personal. As long as you can stand the one you have, ride with it while you look into other saddles. You LBS might have a bin where they keep brand new "take-off" saddles when someone else upgrades that you might upgrade to. You'll know it's time to upgrade when your saddle begins to limit how long you can remain comfortable on your bike.

No one can tell you what the best saddle is for you. Only you can know that from experience.

Personally, I like Fizik.

Runner, thanks for the photo, I had read about the blue/orange but this is my first glimpse. Do you have access to an image of the 2012 CAAD10 in Raw aluminum?

Rode 47 miles on it Saturday morning with a group of 40+ ... Absolutely loved it ... no comparison to the entry level bike that it replaced.
