Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Updated pic with new Forte' Titan wheel set, Fizik 3mm bartape(switched from white to black), and Conti 25's... I love these wheels and they were very affordable. They are a 16/20 bladed spoke wheel set and they feel great! Almost 2 lbs light with Conti versus Schwalbes....spin up quick, roll forever and very smooth. My only issue (not really) is the freewheel is nearly silent! I thought the Maddux was quiet, but this is just eerie.... perfect for solitude rides.

Hey, thanks for your input. But if we are talking cars, the way I see it is, having a sports car with a massive fender gap (gap between tire and fender), which would look awful. All sports/race cars are low to the ground without much space between the fender and tire. Look at most bikes out there, the gap between the wheel and downtube is minimal. The CAAD 10 has an above average gap, which to me looks hideous.

I'm getting a lot of BB flex in my CAAD10. If I stand on one pedal and bounce I can see it flex, while pedaling hard I can see it in the chainrings. Running a hallowgram SL crank. I keep throwing the front chain off on the outside. I have had it adjusted and it shifts fine on a stand but keeps throwing the chain under power. I'm a big guy 195lbs and can push a decent amount of power. Maybe i'm too big for this bike?

I'm heavier than that and have no problem with my CAAD 10. Sounds like the SL crank is bad. Please send it to me for proper disposal.

Are the cranks tight? I've had my cranks come loose over time and became wobbly.

Not sure, bought the bike used and it has mostly new parts. Not sure how to check them. Would a loose crank arm cause the frame to flex? Would loose crank arms cause me to drop the chain? If I stand on one pedal I can see the frame flex. My Dad bought a full tool set and nice bike stand but so far we don't know how to work on bikes lol. I'm going to take it over there and have a look.

Here's a video that shows how to remove the crankset...obviously, you don't need to remove the crankset to tighten it, but it'll show what needs to be done. Basically, just stick a 10mm allen wrench in the crank and tighten...don't get too crazy though, technically you should use a torque wrench for this, but if the crankset is loose, you'll be able to easily tell if it needs to be tightened.

I've had mine come loose on a climb before after really cranking on it. The whole crankset/chainring started wobbling back and forth and I dropped the chain right off of it. Luckily, I was only about five miles from home at the time, so I just made it work as best I could.

It's probably not this, but it's something that easy enough to check.

Just purchased a Caad8 on eBay. Took to the LBS for a service to be told "it's like new". Great feeling as I got it cheap and its done less than 200 miles- I did nearly a quarter of that on my first ride! Also got some Garmin Vector pedals, so I'll be flying along. Will post a pic later

I'd have to believe that either the crank is loose or the frame has some sort of defect because my frame doesn't flex at all. I weigh a solid 225 and have been amazed with the stiffness of the Caad10's frame which was one of the reasons I chose one over an entry level carbon bike.

Problem turned out to be a bent chainring. I ordered some FSA super pro chainrings to replace it. Frame still flexes while I stand on it, not sure how much it should or shouldn't. But the chainring should resolve the chain issue and likely it wasn't flex while pedaling but just the bent ring that I was seeing.

The old frame flex test.

A lot of folks have the crank in the horizontal position and one or both feet on the pedals. They lock the brakes and lean against the wall or some other type of stationary object. They bounce up and down on the pedals while staring at the BB area. They see slight movement. Right away, most will think it's frame flex. Unless it's a 63cm steel frame, most, if not all of that movement is simply tire flex. If you have a wheelset designed for lightweight climbers, you may get some slight flex from that. Change the tire psi to a few different pressure settings and you will see the bike move even more or less.

The CAADS are great for heavy riders. Go out and enjoy the bike. Don't worry about any flex. It's just an illusion.

Agree with this post about the stiffness of CAAD10 frames, although, I recently built a Jamis Xenith Elite and was pleasantly surprised at the BB area in particular, which, to me, feels slightly stiffer than my CAAD10s. I'm not gonna run out and get rid of the CAAD10s though!

cheers

Good advice and this is exactly what I decided to do. I like the ride so don't care if it is or isn't flex lol. I just been ridin it.

Looks like they're getting into the fatbike category too.

I'm a bit disappointed with the Slate, the white one ridden by Tim Johnson had a real nice road geometry to it.
The ones on here look far more relaxed.
Still think I'll end up with one though.

It looks like the green one spotted in the wild was sitting next to the gray Slate one.

Based on the below link, I was under the assumption they'd all be the same.
New Cannondale ?Slate? gravel bike will have 650b wheels and 30mm suspension fork | road.cc

Cannondale keeps on going with their aluminum bikes!
I'm new to this forum but already for 10 years a proud owner of a CAAD5.
It is now totally disassembled for maintenance and upgrades.

Interesting to see the disc CAAD12 frameset is lighter than non-disc. Wonder how built weights compare.

I love the yellow Dura Ace Caad 12 disc.
I'm disappointed the Geometry of the slate is so relaxed. I may have to keep my Caad 10 now.
The plan was a slate instead of my CX and road bikes but the slate won't quite fit the bill as it doesn't look quite road enough for me.
