Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A very hypothetical fit question. Suppose you woke up one morning and ...

Your height and leg length were the same.

But your femur was 2cm shorter and your lower leg was 2cm longer.

Your feet were a size bigger.

Would your saddle move up, down, forward or back? Would your cleats move forward or back?

Would you want shorter or longer cranks.

Yes.

I'd ride 30 miles and figure it out afterwards.

I would recommend discontinuing the use of HGH immediately.

OK, what I meant is if a person has feet that are larger than normal for their height, and longer than normal lower legs in relation to the rest of their legs, what would that do to their bike geometry and adjustment? I thought the Kafka-like description would make it easier to understand.

Seat more forward, shorter cranks so the knees don't come too far up because of the longer tibia. CLeats would be on different shoes, but would be in the same spot in relation to your old shoes. Ball of the foot over the spindle more or less.

That sounds about right. I'm 6' but wear size 13 shoes. Most people my height wear 11's or 12's. My wife has pointed out that my lower legs look freakishly long.

I'm pretty comfortable on 175mm cranks. I tried 170's for a few weeks but I didn't like it too much. I know a lot of people with my leg length use longer than 175mm cranks.

Also, the "Lemond Formula" doesn't really work for me. I have my saddle about 2cm higher.

And now I don't feel so bad about wanting my saddle far forward.

No! I'd forget all that, and try to figure out how I got into a David Lynch movie. Then I'd use the bike to get away from the devil, which would lead me right to it. Finally, the credits would roll, and everyone would be confused.

One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And one pill makes your femur 2 cm shorter, your lower leg 2 cm longer, and your feet a size bigger
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call
Call Alice
When she was just small

When men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know

When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"
Remember what Pcad said:
"Feed your head
Feed your head
Feed your head"

I'd want Bio rings on my crank and crank out of my bio.

What do mean "Hypothetical" - here's what happened to me the morning before a crit:

As you can see I'm still dialing in fit - I'll keep you posted.

edit - don't flame me - I had shaved my legs that morning.

If you are not already, you should be in the bike business. With your approach, you'd be perfect for retail bike sales. And pro fits.

Man, that's an old bike. You need a new one. You will be a lot faster on a new bike. New bikes are faster. Trust me on this.

Did you wake up in bed or in a bathtub of ice? Better check to make sure your kidneys are still there.
