RIP Jure Robic

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Incredible RAAM competitor.
In the back of my mind I was always wondering if any former Grand Tour caliber riders would ever compete in RAAM. (other than Boyer back in 1985) I would have liked to see how they would do against Robic.
RIP

There was a nice (and long) profile of Robic in the NY Times from 2006.

I was sad to read about that earlier tonight. It puts some minor incidents with motorists today in perspective. RIP Jure.

He was an incredible athlete. There was some question about his ability to repeat as a winner this year because he lost some of his support staff, which used to be members of the army. It didn't matter.

This is really terrible. He became a hero of sorts for me after I read the aforementioned NY Times article. He was always pushing the limits of human endurance and I respect him immensely for that.

Wow, that sucks! If any of you don't know who Robic is, watch "Bicycle Dreams". The guy was amazing. RIP.

Wow, that sucks. With the amount of time he spent on a bicycle, though, the odds were stacked against him.

He was an absolute animal. Almost nobody could touch him. The only time he seemed to have a mental meltdown was 2009 when he quit somewhere around PA, because he couldn't handle that he couldn't shake the #2 rider, Daniel Wyss, who eventually won. He got a 1 hour time penalty before the race started for whizzing behind the stage (some local cop had to be a dick and punish him) and that one hour came into play later in the race. Robic's team made accusations of eneven application of the rules, citing examples they felt Wyss should have gotten time penalties. It wan't pretty.

But he came back and won 2010. I have the uptmost respect for the man, for dominating the world's toughest race. I cannot imagine the mental discipline, much less the physical ability, to finish RAAM solo.

Just to expound, Jure was still the FIRST rider to reach each timing station. He chose not to continue to the last one - the finish (since his lead time was less than the multiple time penalties he was assessed)
As for the 30min penalty assessment at the start, I don't know enough about the organizers bathroom facilities to make an informed opinion, but if there weren't facilities readily available for the riders near the start , that is more a reflection on their poor management rather than Jure's decision to drain his bladder just before the start of America's Longest TT.

Anyone know where I can buy a Robic shirt? I checked the RAAM site, but didn't see one. Robic was my hero. I've been following him ever since the NY Times article back in 2006. I just bought the Bicycle Dreams DVD which prominently featured Robic in the 2006 race. I guess I've had it four days and watched it eight times.
