Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First Century Advice!

Hi everybody! Me and my friend are going on our first century tomorrow! We got our road bikes only 2 week ago, but I think we can do it. Both of us are 15 and we just ride for fun. I just wanted to ask for any tips that anyone can give us, such as what to eat, what to take with us, etc. Last week we went on a 65mile ride and I got really dehydrated even though I drank about 60oz of water, we also had a really small breakfast and I got tired by the last 10miles. Thanks!

is this a formal century where there are rest stops or are you guys doing it on your own? you should eat a decent dinner tonight and drink plenty of water starting tonight. have a small breakfast tomorrow and then plan on getting roughly 200-300 calories into you for each hour you are on the bike. Also, make sure you have emergency equipment, pump, tubes, etc. It would suck to get a flat 50 miles out and have nothing.

"We THINK we can do it" is a statement indicating self doubt to me. "We are going to do it" is more like it. Most importantly have fun.

I'd think if you're 15 years old you'll be fine doing 100 miles. If its going to be hot, I'd count on something like 150oz of fluid consumption. If its cool you can probably get away with 100oz. When I did my century, I had a snack at 25mi and 75mi, and a small lunch around 50mi.

Eat & drink small amounts, but frequently. Easily digested simple carbs: snack bars, bananas .... bring some cash to buy more.
