Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You mean the clean-er guy, or the clean-ish guy.
The guy less dirty or doped.

And meanwhile amateur folks are training at wee hours of the morning or late at night... just to bump their ftp for mere 10's of watts.

Correct.

Let's just hope cycling can ever get a handle on this. I'm starting to have my doubts. That plastic transfusion bag residue test is a good one eh? That's new. So now they'll store the blood in pepsi bottles.

I stopped equating what my sorry arse tries to achieve with what they do many many years ago.

They ride bikes, I ride bikes - there the comparison ends.

That's it. I'm going to start doping.

Oh wait.

Never mind.

Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, the UCI's attorney would certainly want you to believe that my client used chebuterol, or blood dope. And they make a good case. Hell, I almost felt pity myself. But ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, I have one, final, thing I want you to consider. [walks to a display stand and pulls down a screen] Ladies and gentleman, this is Chew-bacca. [true] Chewbacca is a Wookie from the planet Kashyyyk, but Chewbacca… LIVES …on the planet Endor. Now think about that. That does NOT MAKE SENSE.

Why would a Wookie, an eight-foot tall Wookie, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of two-foot tall Ewoks? That does NOT MAKE SENSE! [the jury listens] But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this case? Nothing. [Gerald buries his head in his hand, shaking his haed at the disaster his case is being turned into] Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does NOT MAKE SENSE! Look at me. I'm a lawyer defending a Tour de France winner, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberatin' and conjugatin' the Emancipation Proclamation, [apporaches and softens] does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does NOT MAKE SENSE! If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit! The defense rests. [walks back to his table]

ES,

Change to Maple Syrup and minced Garlic. Far more flavorful.

Actually from a legal point of view, this lays out very interestingly.

Given that the test for the plastecizer apparently has not been fully validated yet, they can't sanction him for blood doping on the basis of that test.

However, to the extent Contador tries to explain the chenbuterol positive, with the tainted meat theory, and argues that the very low level is evidence of that, he opens the door to the sanctioning authority to rebut that theory by showing its explained by blood doping with blood containing a small amount of chenbuterol.

So the evidence of the plastecizer doesn't come in as a violation in its own right, but as a rebuttal to Contador's defense.

This puts AC in a real box, either offer no defense to the chenbuterol, and lose, or open the door for the plastecizer test.

Regarding b), because testing is now taking into account indirect evidence for proof of doping. No one gets faster by ingesting plasticizers, but they are being used as an indicator of a blood transfusion. I'm not saying indirect evidence isn't valid, but it opens the door, as rangerdavid said, to all kinds of accusations, witch hunts, suppositions, etc.

Are plasticizers found exclusively in plastic IV bags? So they found the chemical, does it mean it came from IV bags?

But really...I don't care

Merlin ... LOL! You must have loved the OJ trial.

The test for phthalates (typical plasticizers) is a piece of cake and can be extremely accurate so the analytical side of this one is easy. Of course now he's going to say he stores all his food at home, for weeks at a time, in tupperware containers in the fridge.

(Actually, tupperware probably wouldn't do it to significant levels, but you get the idea.)

Given the ridiculous sensitivity of these tests - I mean, come on, picograms? - and given just how hard the hammer comes down on people who are caught - I'm amazed that anyone who is a serious GC contender would be doing any sort of doping.

A domestique doping, that I get. But anybody in the top ranks? That's insane.
