Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think my ride this morning trumps everyone elses *PICS*

It's Balloon Fiesta time here in Albuquerque. Unfortunately I didn't have a chance to ride yesterday when the winds were favorable for riding through all the balloons, but I got out today and it was still nice.

I'm not sure how many balloons are out here this year, but in 2001 or something they had almost 1,000.

Also, this is just a Wednesday. The real craziness happens on the weekends.

Since I'm taking pics with my lame iPhone, it's hard to see all the balloons... but all those specs in the sky are hot air balloons.

Going to ride down there again tomorrow and hope the winds are more favorable and actually shoot them over the roads.

The actual ride:

Not impressed. We got that every year at Derby time. We also have trees, something that seems to be missing in your photos

Haha, this is the biggest ballooning event in the world. I looked it up and it seems there are around 750 balloons here this year.

Also, we have some trees here. It's not a total desert... just check out pic #2

lol, I can't even make it a mile without 100 feet of climbing.

Some rides for proof:
https://connect.garmin.com/activity/51553465
50 miles - 3,320 ft elevation gain

https://connect.garmin.com/activity/51374950
40 miles - 2,300 ft elevation gain

https://connect.garmin.com/activity/50794222
60 miles - 3,070 ft elevation gain

The ride this morning had about 1,500 feet of elevation gain.

Do a 180 and climb up Sandia Peak, then show us those photos and people won't think its flat.

Where he took that picture is over 1000 ft from the valley below. He is at least 6K ft above sea level. Towards his back is a mountain with a road that gets to the summit at 10,678 ft.

Here is a crappy 1.3 mp pic from that summit taken 2 weeks ago. The tiny S of a road is Tramway Blvd where he took the pic from.

Mt Taylor is the tiny bump of a hill on O'Brien's picture and that is 11,305

Yeah no mountains but we will be trucking in some dirt to get up to the requisite elevation. Have patience.

I'm going to be in Albuquerque/Santa Fe next week... I'll have to get the bike down there and ride.

Was there an organized ride before the festival again this year?

They have a schedule of events: https://pages.swcp.com/~nmts/

For some serious climbing in Santa Fe do the Santa Fe Ski climb or Sandia Climb here in Albuquerque.

If you stay until the 27th
