Drafting the Automobile=Not smart??

Yesterday I went out for a fast ride around the lake, I was heading home as a car pulled out of the side road just infront so I hit the powerband to draft the car only to find that is was an old lady who seemed not to know where she was going but also that I was riding her bumper @ a good pace...I kind felt like man this is a bad Idea pulled back after 100yrs or so to watch her pull off the road with out any blinkers...SO the question is. To draft or Not to draft?
Thanks... :thumb:

When drafting motorist that have no clue what you're doing or don't even know you are there... Well, these are the chances you take.

If you need to add more "thrill" to cycling by intentionally taking risks with your life, then you're doing it all wrong.

Also, if you ask the question, you already know the answer.

Everyone knows you only draft trucks.............

Did cars have blinkers in 1910?

My powerband is Motorhead.

I dont see the need for a question mark after Not Smart, it should be an exclamation point! As in Not Smart !

I like drafting the occasional SUV around a local park loop, especially when there's a kid in the back seat cheering me on.

Besides that, no, I don't like drafting, mainly when they're out on the street and can hit their brakes or make a turn at any time.

DataJunkie 10-07-10 07:01 AM

I do it every so often while descending a climb. It is extremely risky but as long as you are aware of the risks.
That and the smell of the car braking on a long downhill is quite disgusting.

Can I share? :P

Should I cue the pic of the guy who got run over by a truck?

I generally only draft small pick up trucks where I can look through the back window out through the front window. That way I can keep my eye on upcoming traffic.

LAJ 10-07-10 07:57 AM

SUV's and pick up trucks are my drafting vehicle of choice. Cars do provide some help, but they just don't have that nice pocket of dead air that the bigger vehicles provide.

Of course, if one has to ask if it is smart or not, I'm not real sure that same person is smart enough to ride a bike.

Maybe not smart, but fun. Ask Waterrockets.

Indeed! Where's surgeon....he needs to see this LOL????

Scorer75 10-07-10 08:52 AM

Drafting cars is dangerous.

City buses, dump trucks, box trucks, and school buses that don't have their exhaust pipes on the right side of the vehicle are great.

But yesterday it was a firetruck, the driver was watching me in his mirror with a smile on his face the whole time. Firetrucks also have a skirt behind the rear wheels so they don't kick up rocks in your face, but add to the vacuum they create. Awesome ride :)

Spire 10-07-10 08:59 AM

It depends how far you are back. Even at 10m back you can still get a decent pull. I find I am high enough up to be able to see completely over smaller vehicles and can often see through the back and front window of minivans.

how many miles of drafting would you say you covered in that period of time?

kleinboogie 10-07-10 10:32 AM

I don't ride to cheat so I don't even though I've been tempted. Just not worth it.
