Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wow. Sounds like you got really lucky to have such (relatively) minor issues. Heal up!

I agree with the lawyer. You are in bad enough shape that you should have someone else do the legwork and deal with the insurance company.

Nobody deserves that. Well except maybe the lady who you hit you.

Take very, very good care of the wounds. Infections can be a real *****.

Heal well, and fast!

Don't be so quick to lawyer-up. It costs money that can be better used toward a replacement bike. Also, by not immediately hiring a lawyer, you save some leverage that can be used later on if the driver/Ins. Co. try to lowball you..... the Threat of retaining an attorney is often just as useful (and sometimes more useful) as the attorney himself, and a lottt cheaper (i.e. more money in your pocket instead of a lawyer's).

P.s. What kind of car(?) was she driving that it took her 40 feet to realize that something was terribly wrong? I would imagine that all but the biggest pickups and SUVs would feel drastically different with a human being and a bicycle dragging on the ground underneath...

That's what I was hoping. I just want to get my bike fixed, and get my medical bills paid. I'm not trying to swindle her out of money.

At the very least, get yourself a new bike and a few bucks beyond the actual medical bills for pain and suffering. You deserve it, and that wouldn't be swindling at all.

Holy ****. You've been helping me a lot lately with my random threads. Just reading that sounds crazy and I'm kind of sitting here in shock. I can't imagine how you don't have any broken bones ! Dragged under the car for 40 ft? What happened exactly? Did she California Roll a stop sign or run a red light?

I just don't understand how someone can T-BONE somebody and not stop immediately.

You deserve a lot more than just getting your bike fixed (along with the medical bills paid). She could have caused some serious, permanent damage.

Best wishes.

My biggest fear is what happened to you today. What was her reaction? Did she show remorse, call 911, etc?

i hope they check her phone to see if she was on a call or texting because I can't see how you don't see someone even after you hit them.

I wish you a very speedy recovery!

As for the driver . . . was she drunk, texting or what?

Don't be a in a rush to settle anything right now. Your medical blls can get really high, really quick, and treatment could take some time, depending on what's needed. Again, pay close attention to what your medical needs are, that's your absolute first priority.

Here are some links for funreading on road rash care:

And Racer Ex's take on why you need to learn the names of several esoteric Russian poets:

Make yourself whole again, then deal with the bike.

I also recommend the "pain free" antiseptic with the numbing agent. Made scrubbing the road rash I just got on my face a lot less painful.

also, if you have insurance and a dermtologist, go to them. I went yesterday just to see what they say and I left with about 30 sheets of tegaderm, antibiotics, creams, etc. All completely free of charge as "samples."

Bad news.

But it could be worse. I'm glad it wasn't.

SO, were your legs shaved or what? How did that work out for you?
