Roubaix Fabric
This may not be the most important thread in the history of Bike Forums but I've been curious about it for a couple of years. It seems as if virtually all tights are made out of the Roubaix fabric which seems a bit odd to me. With all the competition in the marketplace I would think the various producers would be trying to best the other guy with proprietary fabrics.
"Remember the time you turned down that job in Edmonton because of the weather? With our new 'Flanders Furnace' fabric you'll be ready to move to Nunavut when the opportunity arises."
On that note; has anyone tried the new Assos Roubaix bib shorts? Keeping Major Johnson warm in the winter can be a challenge so I'm thinking that I might get a pair. Of the shorts, I mean.

None of my tights are made of "Roubaix" fabric. What are you smoking?

"Roubaix" fabric I think started with Giordana. I still have a pair of bib tights with loops for your feet and everything, probably dates from the late 80s early 90s. Compared to the modern stuff it's pretty flimsy.
The original stuff was two layer (the inside of my tights are white, the outside black). Inside is airy, outside absorbent.
The ubiquitous stuff is similar in function. It's lycra (thick) which is brushed on the inside. This abrades the fabric, making it kind of fuzzy. The fuzziness holds air, doesn't hold water. The unabraded outer surface holds water. Therefore sweat wicks to the outside and there's a layer of air insulation.
I don't look at brochures but the sales guys will say""and this stuff has the Roubaix kind of fabric". And they figure you know what it means.
