Newbie question. LF entry level bike.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Newbie question. LF entry level bike.

Have been looking through craigslist for a used road bike. Something entry- level but with room for upgrades. Also will last a long time as long as I take care of it. I have found a schwinn katana that seems like a good choice for under 300. So what are your thoughts on the katana or should I hold off until something better comes around. In the tampa bay area. thanks guys!

you could get that bike brand new for a little over $300, buying a used one for a little under $300 would not be wise. components are not good and to upgrade it, you have to practically change the whole drivetrain/groupset/wheelset. how much would that be? well over your buying price for this bike which in the first place does not merit to be spent on upgrade parts. dont inherit a problem.

Pass on this one. there are better starter bikes out there.

Here's one for your consideration:

I'm thinking of one of these myself as an entry level road bike. Reviews seem pretty good.
