anyone using a real frame pump?
thinking of picking one up for my commuter bike, and my usual lezyne will be one less thing to carry if i can throw a full length pump right on the frame, and i dont care about weight on this bike at all.
who still makes a full length frame pump, i'm seeing: park sefal blackburn which are good, which to definitely avoid? |
I have a Blackburn, and have had Zefal in the past. Both good. I also have a Park adjustable. Nice because it fits multiple frame sizes so I can swap it between mtn bike & road bike (it has a reversable bit for presta / schreader). Its barrel is a bit shorter, but that dowsn't matter that much. Prefer the Blackburn or Zefal for function & feel.
I have mine under the top tube. Fits fine on my size. |
I haven't in years. Too many other really good options.
|
It might not technically be a frame pump, but I keep a Topeak Road Morph G on my commuter. It has a (tiny) foot brace and a hose, very easy to use. I can't compare it to others though, I haven't used anything else besides a little hand pump, and those suck.

+1 for the Topeak Road Morph.
|
I had a small Topeak frame mount which was difficult to use with higher pressure tires. I have two Giant pumps frame and floor which are decent. The best one I've had is a Zefal which has been pumping gas for about 18 years and tougher than all get out and able to crank psi as high as I need to. This seems to be the newest iteration: http://www.zefal.com/zefal/produit.php?key=881022

I've got one that I started taking with me on long rides after I used 2 CO2's one time. I think it's Blackburn and I like it.
|
I have a blackburn. It works fine. haven't used it in the last 5 years though.
|
Topeak road morph G is my choice for my touring bike. Doesn't kill you getting any tire up to pressure. Not as clean as a true frame pump to mount but oh so good.
|
I use a blackburn frame pump on my commuter and winter bike. It works well. Just make sure you get the right size to fit your bike.
You can use the frame pump if you don't have a pump peg by simply using a strap lashing the pump to the top tube near the headtube. That said, a peg works better; so much cleaner than any other option. No extra straps or brackets or anything like that. Which is why I use it. Also much easier to get the tire up to pressure than a mini pump. |
I go back and forth between co2 and frame.
Used to use co2 strictly for shorter rides 20-30 milers during the week. Went back to Blackburn medium frame pump as rides got longer century+. Limitless supply of air incase of multiple flats, stuck 20+ miles out would really suck and would really piss someone off coming to pick me up. Flated 8 miles into a ride one day... seriously stressed out for the rest of the 70 miles =(. The one with springy handle and velcro strap that is real long and fits in under the top tube. Long stroke, isn't horrible for pumping up on the side of the road. It kinda went on the bike, hasn't bothered me and stayed, co2 been staying in cycle junk drawer at home *shrug*. |
Zefal HPX, best pump ever.
|
I like the Zefal HPX, particularly when I'm using high-pressure tubulars.
I'm not sure about the exact designations, but one model pumps to 135psi, another to 160psi. |
I haven't been without an HPX since 1994 or so. Had a Blackburn for a bit 1992-1993. Plastic head cracked, got a replacement part and it cracked to, so I only choose Blackburn if I need a nice, not too expensive rack nowadays.
I do like pumping up tires with my Morph better than using the HPX, however. Little foot peg and hose extension FTW! |
2 Blackburn frame pumps, 5 years with no problems at all.

I have a Zefal that was given to me by my uncle. It must be at least 30 years old and works great.
And it is built so that you do not needs straps to hold it to the frame, it is held there under spring tension. I can jump off curbs and it stays put. |
I wouldn't ride without one. I hate mini-pumps (I've tried at least half a dozen; one took more than 600 strokes to inflate a 700x28), and C02 just doesn't make sense to me--too much waste, plus I use bigger tires these days and even a 16g cartridge doesn't inflate them enough, so I have to carry a pump anyway.
The standard for years, and still hard to beat, is the Zefal hPx. Mine is at least 15 years old and still works like new. I also have a newer Blackburn I really like. Can't remember the model offhand. Both of them work great, stay on the bike over rough pavement and last forever. |

Zefal HPX 12 -13 years old, never had a problem with it, friends impressed by how well it works, never falls off bike

Been using the same Silca with Campy head for more than 20 years. Rebuilt it a few times, now it's finally wearing out completely. Will go for a Zefal to replace it

I carry a Silca with campy head, haven't needed to rebuild it yet.
I used it more times at Hotter n Hell this year than I can recall, bailing out folks who either had no pump or had no clue as to how to use one. |

I've never understood the need for carry one. I mean why carry something all the time that's used maybe every 10,000 miles when a 16g CO2 and air chuck SL head will do the trick fine (keep in mind this isn't the touring or commuting forum).
Now of course, if you live somewhere that has tree thorns all over the roads and frequent flats, then sure. But otherwise flats are so incredibly rare why bother to lug it around. Funny enough though, my frame was designed for and raced by a pro team yet still has a pump peg. A little old school addition by Greg. |
I use the Park. I've let others use it to pump up their tires after a flat.
http://sprinterdellacasa.blogspot.co...rame-pump.html http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_TbmplkIYLx...-00-33_750.jpg I carry it in an out of the way place. cdr |
