Long Beach Marathon, 10.17.10 (On a 36" Unicycle!)

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Long Beach Marathon, 10.17.10 (On a 36" Unicycle!)

My first bike tour marathon! Got up at 4am to make the 6am start for the Long Beach 26.2 mile marathon! There were about 3,500 bikes, and I was the only unicyclist! About 25,000 runners started at 7am.

There was the expected bottleneck of bikes at the starting gun, and it took me a good 5 minutes just to get pass the start line, since I was about 1/2 way back in the pack. It took about a mile after we started for things to open up enough to get up to speed.

I was passing lots of bikes on the the hills, and the spectators were going wild along the way! I filmed this video *while* I was riding, and rode the entire 26.2 miles non-stop, with no dismounts or falls. (Got lucky!) Even with the filming and the slow start, I managed to finish in 2:08. I was happy with that.

Thanks, but i don't think of the 2-wheelers as "nutjobs", lol! They just a great group of people and we're all just having a blast doing our own thing!

He's doing ok. He's at city of Hope, diagnosed with a very rare form of leukemia. I've been visiting him regularly and he's in great spirits. Thanks for asking.
