Bike rack for a Jeep?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike rack for a Jeep?

Hi,

I just bought a 2011 Jeep Rubicon and I need a good bike rack. Please keep in mind that I also need it for mountain bike.
I don't care if its a Hitch Rack or on the tire. But must be a good solid quality. Prefer to be able to carry multi bikes.

Please help.

I used one from Grabber on my Wrangler's spare with no problems. I would've prefered a hitch rack though, those hinges aren't the strongest, especially if you've got an oversized tire on it.

I have a Wrangler with 33's and a Wilderness Trail Rack on the back, so my bike rack had to clear both. I got a Hollywood (Extended Hitch) 3 bike capacity rack and it has served me well for 10 years.

I'll try and take a pic so you can see the set up. But it fits perfectly and I do a couple of simple things to actually attach the two racks together rock solid. I've been off roading with my bike on the back no problem.

1upusa is best rack I've ever had; fastest loading/unloading-no bungees; tires are only touch point; no shake/rattle; carries my road bike and 29er mtb; rides great on my '10 Wrangler (non-Rubicon).

Buying a rack is like buying a bike - sooooo many options - what's your budget?

Generally though, when it comes to bike racks, its one of those rare instances where you actually get what you pay for.

I am not concern about the money. I am concern about being lazy. I don't want to carry a heavy rack on or off the car. But at the same time, something that will feel safe.

any of the "tray" style bike racks from either thule or yakima for your hitch will be excellent. both of those companies make top notch stuff.

Tray style will be heavier, correct?

Yes, but I usually put mine on in the spring, and it stays there all season. I have the yakima holdup and its great.

Well, you're going to have to comprimise somewhere.

If you want something sturdy and "safe", you'll probably end up getting something that's a little more heavy. Its the price you pay for security of your valuable bikes.

i mentioned tray style because i dont like the racks that hold the bikes at the top tube. they are OK, but eventually if you carry your bikes a bunch it will mar the finish on them from being clamped in. further, depending on what kind of mtb you have, you may need a fancy contraption to make it work with a top tube carrier. tray style is much better, IMO.

Bike rack for a Jeep? Sounds like a reasonable trade.

I have used many racks on both my Jeeps and hands down the tray style works best. The top tube style racks work ok az long as you have a normal semi-horizontal top tube. Sloping top tubes, pita... If any of your MTBs have dual suspension, forget about using that style.

Also, don't get suckered in to one of those racks that goes around your external spare tire. Over time, it will pull on the carrier and door if attached together like the previous TJ models and will un-align your rear hatch, thus causing potential water leaks. Tray style or you are really just kidding yourself about needing a durable rack for a Jeep.
