Finally getting proper clothes
 

Hi everybody!

I have finally decide to get proper road biking cloths and I am kind of stuck between sizes.
I am planning to get these shorts:

I don't know If I should get small or medium shorts. My waist is 31 inches, but I don't want the shorts to be loose. I also need to get a jersey. Any suggestion???
I can't afford clipless pedals and shoes so I will have to keep on using my running shoes for a couple of months.(My feet hurt if I bike more than 70miles)

Your close to the line, best to try them on in person.

With ~waste size, I wear a small in Pearl Izumi... but a Medium in Sugoi and most other higher end brands... Most EU brands run smaller, I'd gamble on the medium.

Get bib shorts, WAY more comfortable. I never wear my regular shorts anymore.

i have a pair of shorts too big now because i got them and then lost a bit of weight. I also got a pair that is a bit tight in anticipation of further weight loss that never happened. I prefer the tighter ones. Lycra stretches and it isn't constrictive.

buy bibs, and be willing to pay more.

i would go for a medium with a 31" waist.

indeed. with a 31 waist I am probably going with XS from our current supplier.

size M is always too big, sometimes size S is good, sometimes too big.

2 things from my first rookie mistake I made when buying the right gear when I bought my first new road bike:

1- buy the smaller of the two sizes if between sizes. I bought nice shorts that are just a bit to big and they fall down in back when riding. these things will stretch out. you want you fit tight, not constricting but very snug.

2-buy bibs, i bought a pair cause said shorts had poor fit and i am now converted. Will never buy a pair of shorts again. Bibs just work better for me. they stay up and in the right place no matter how long I ride. The LBS tried to send me in this direction and i pushed for the shorts, should have listened. They also said how they should fit but i wasn't use to the tight fit and went for the large instead of medium. dumb move

Lastly, I bought Louis Garneau Equipe bib shorts and they were more expensive then I would have hoped to pay but are worth every penny. The padding is far superior to the cannondale shorts I bought first. and they fit me better.

A nice set of road shoes and pedals can be easily had for $70-$100 by the way. For instance the Nashbar Z11 pedals and Diadora Speedracer R shoe.

If you're doing 70 miles in running shoes and street shorts, good for you.

Try them on and don't opt out for the cheapest gear you can find. If you buy quality gear it will last longer and you will be more comfortable on the road.

Assos is good. Oh yeah, this feels great. Gore Biikewear is really good too. People who ride a lot often end up migrating to Assos.
