you can, this guy just doesn't know what he's doing.
step 1: find cause of flat (if any) step 2: remove tubeless valve stem step 3: install regular tube step 4: don't call your brother, continue on ride, and end up not looking like an ******* on the internet. |

This tubeless tire technology makes tubulars seem reasonable.

Just in case no one has mentioned it yet:

I have a couple of problems here.
First one: Since when is 40 miles a long ride? Second one: I have never seen a road situation where it is either a pothole or a rock. |
Couple of weeks ago I took my newly built up bike for its maiden voyage. I have a spare tube, patch kit and tire levers in a saddle bag and a frame pump attached to my other bike on which I haven't had a flat in 4 years. I decided not to bother putting the saddle bag on my new bike for its first ride of course as the fates would have it I flatted. Had to walk about 30 minutes in road shoes which destroyed a new pair of iClic cleats :notamused:

How could this possibly have been a "first" for anybody??

By the way. You have used your one and only call of shame card and you have to carry repair kit.
I truly dread the day that I have to make the call of shame. It will have to be one helluva doozy, as I will never hear the end of it.... |

I heard that it is fairly easy to put a tube inside of a tubeless tire. That is a selling point that of tubeless or so I thought.
By the way, I see no one mentioned that you need a tube and some type of inflation system in case of emergencies. I love this place... |

But why oh why would you go on a 40 mile ride or any ride for that matter without the basic tools to repair or fix common road problems? Live and learn. |
I blame it on cell phone technology and the human condition of laziness...
Why be bothered to carry an extra 1 lb of necessary gear when you can leave it at home, and then have the capability to bother someone else directly to help you out when your laziness bites you in the ass? If I was your brother, I would have charged you for time and gas to pick your ass up. A tube costs $4.50, and a tube kit about the same. I'm sure when you factor wasted time into it, your no-brainer stunt probably cost about $75.00. From the apparent anguish experienced, the lost "opportunity cost" for a nice ride was worth a bunch. But the good news is this: The education you're getting here is priceless. Think about life 25 years ago: If you were dumb enough to go on a long ride without a tube and kit, where would you be? Oh, I know...you would probably have been the guy who carried a dime... What you need is a ride to namby pamby land, jackwagon... (I love that commercial) |
Next time, sir, be present with your parents and girlfriend so that we may humiliate you in proper style.

I can see myself in the OPs situation and trying that. For me, this would mean not only the flat, but busted toes and skinned knees as well! (too fat and slow) |
Why in the world would someone post this here?
Maybe the OP does need a ride to namby pamby land. HTFU and fix your own flats, and even if you have to call for a ride, DON'T Post it here. We are a tough hard bunch. This is the 41, not foo! |

Today, the weather was just awesome, 60 degrees, sunny, clear skies, light to 0 wind, and just a great day for a nice long ride. I took off with the idea of going for a 40 mile ride, and as I started spinning, it felt awesome!
My bliss was quickly interrupted and I was brought back to reality when 9 miles in, I had to choose between running right into a pothole, or riding over a rock. I chose to take my chances with ridding over the rock and **POP**! next thing I know I'm goin 19 mph on a flat front tire. I pulled off the road and walked my wounded bike to a walgreens about 100 yards away where I waited 45 minutes for my brother to come pick me up. IT WAS SUCH A BUZZ KILL, that put a sudden and premature end to my Friday ride. |
Stop picking on the guy, folks - be constructive and tell him what he should have done.

I thought about this thread today as I was bouncing over a gravel road 20 miles from home. And I thought, OMG, what if I get a flat? And then I remembered I'd brought a patch kit. And a spare tube. And a frame pump. And the knowledge to use them.
So I carried on my merry way. |

You might know the guy I found on the side of a busy road on Sunday. I've just finished climbing a decent hill with a fairly wide, rideable shoulder, when I find this guy with a beautiful Specialized walking along pushing his bike. Being the genteel Southerner I am, I stop to offer assistance. He's got a flat, but no spare tube. I go so far as to offer him my spare and he tells me... wait for it... "I don't know how to change a tube." My gentility does not include giving tube changing lessons three feet from 50 mph traffic, so I let him borrow my cell phone to call his WIFE to COME GET HIM. I felt ashamed for him.
I'm riding away wondering which is worse, not knowing how to change a tube, or not knowing how to change a tube and then not even bothering to bring a phone. |
