Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's Your TOP speed???

Just curious. When you post your speed, also post the bike you were riding at the time.

Search the archives for a few threads about this. Those of us with hills nearby have a huge advantage here even if we aren't that great of cyclists (although 53-11 could put us all to shame on level ground). Those riding tandems are speed gods. I need to try that someday.

FWIW, my top speed to date is about 47mph, down a short but steep hill aided aerodynamically by my Camelbak. I've found it's worth about 1-1.5mph at those speeds.

- 62.5* mph, Talladega National Forest, east of Birmingham, AL on a '98 Erickson tandem.
- 56* mph, coming out of the San Bernardino Mountains in SoCal on an '84 Raleigh Prestige.
[*coasting in a very aero riding position. Not much point in pedalling once you get above 40 mph.]

NOTE: We saw 51.9* mph today whilst riding near Pine Mountain Georgia on the '98 Erickson tandem.

About 150. Oh wait, you said bike....downhill something over 35 on a comfort bike. Flat ground something a little over 29 mph on the Allez, but I haven't had the road bike long. Should be interesting on some of the rides we've done in the past. To be honest I'm not sure I have the guts to let it go down some of those hills, the roads aren't all that smooth and they do involve some curves. Maybe I'll put on my BMX leathers and give it a go....hehe

Okay... so 55MPH was my fastest speed on my Aegis Aro Svelte roadbike. I was going down a local hill here (1-1/2 miles, 9% avg grade) in a full tuck.

I cracked 40 once pedaling pretty hard down a hill. I thought it was cool at the time, but you're all making me feel like a loser. But give me a break, it's Indiana.

Nice job. Was that on dirt or pavement?

On the Telamina Scenic Byway in Oklahoma on a 13% decent a buddy of mine hit 66MPH. He was riding his custom "Kelson" Ti with SSLs and DA (or are they Ultegra) hubs. Anyway, was seen by several other riders and we got to see the bike computer at the next stop too. Wild man, just wild!

EDIT: I hit 46MPH on the same hill. I was on my brakes! I am just a big chicken.

218 mph in a 71 Dodge Charger 440 Magnum 4 speed, RADAR clocked at a speedway.

56 mph on my current 84 Trek 660 coming down out of Big Bear in California...I don't ride brakes. Legs were spinning so fast I couldn't pedal faster for more speed if I wanted to.

28mph on a skate board! Down hill of course.

Please list mods, including aero, and speedway! Being a big Mopar fan, I'm curious to see what it takes to make a 390 HP car at almost 4k lbs. go 218 mph.

I'm not sure either but I'll bet you that somewhere in there is a 60T gear (crankshaft sprocket) and a 180mm stroke length.

"What would happen to the cyclist and his/her bike if they were to hit a bump in the road and fall at the speeds mentioned here?" Unfortunatley, this thought is running through my head when I go downhill fast, so I don't think I will ever achieve speeds near what you guys have done....
