Assos winter bibs-- $360 and raised seams?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That's correct, I do have a team kit to wear. If it is cold, I'll wear leg warmers under the tights, but if it is colder still, I'd like to wear these windtex-endowed tights under the bib shorts, and the appearance will be the same as leg warmers (except they won't ever slip down). I commute all year, and I've regularly worn various base layers (e.g. merino base layer, or the Craft Zero WS short) under the bib shorts before, and its worked fine. If the bib tights work under the shorts, then that's great. If I discover that they bunch or chafe or something under the bib shorts, then I can wear them over just like I am supposed to. So, for this reason, I don't want raised seams.

Anybody have any problems with this?

True, most of the time, but even that is borderline heresy.

But doing both is easy enough, especially if you'd like to repay/thank your team sponsors for making your riding season a less expensive one.

Since it's voting season (and we're being anal retentive), then I'm going w/ no chamois, un-raised seam tights as a baselayer, followed by team bibs. That should cover all bases.

OP -- if you're going to rake out that kinda dough and also expect quality on par w/ Assos for a baselayer, then I suggest something from Exte Ondo.

No one's being anal retentive, unless you are saying something about the way one's ass might feel wearing something between their chamois and their skin. Friggin' weird.

Geez, I'm real friggin' sorry -- just trying to follow the script:

Well, I would like to find a high quality, no chamois, flat-seamed, windtex-laden winter bib, and at a good price.

The Exte Ondo are interesting, but the internet retailers that sell this brand are suspect.

I've liked Giordona for near-Assos quality, and their bib does has flat seams. Not a lot of places carry Giordona; CC does, but they only have it with chamois. The FormaRed-Carbon Windfront Bib Tights do come in a non-chamois version, I am going to have to look for it.

lickbike

Call them 1st. As a sizing reference, I'm 5'11.5", ~185lbs and take large Assos and large Exte Ondo.

Thanks. I'll check Lickbike out. BTW, does Exte Ondo have the all-important flat seams for which I yearn?

And how the heck do you fit in a large Assos, when at 6'0" 174.8 lbs. the XLG Assos is too tight all over for me?

Oh, yearner of flat seams, you'll have to call them to verify. I can only vouch that just about the only thing that are more comfy than my Assos bibs are my Exte Ondo knickers.

How can you NOT fit into a large?

Rough crowd. OP, the hallmark of any fine garment is in the fabrics and finish. If you don't get that in the item you purchased, send them back. Unless of course, you bought the label. BTW, nothing special about Rapha.

I have Assos wintermilles, last iteration, with S5 pad. The conventional seams are not abrasive. The pad is great. I can't comprehend why somebody would buy Assos bottoms without getting their pad, it's the best, which is why a lot of top-tier companies pay Assos to install Assos Cytech pads. https://www.elasticinterface.com/cycl...references.php

Incorrect. Assos, like Rapha, Gore, Capo and a host of other companies are paying another outfit for their pads.
Assos just buys the pads. big deal. Same pad on some Rapha and Capo and Cannondale bibs. the difference? The lycra? The label? The prices? You decide...

You can get last year's same Assos bibs from Colorado Cyclist for $180 right now.

Incorrect. Assos has ownership in cytech. Assos has the patents and does design work. If you buy bottoms with "Elastic Interface Technology" pads, Assos' cash registers are ringing up. They do really good pads.

My only critique of Assos is, they need to use YKK zippers. I'm not an Assos-or-nothing proponent like some people. Assos is really nice to ride. But there are other really smart-design companies out there too, and end of season, you can get their nice stuff with Assos pads at really great prices.

Their cream is really good, too.

Same difference. Other companies buy the right to use cytech pads. Resulting in you getting the same chamois whether you buy ASSOS or say, RAPHA.
Case in point: the Rapha bib has the same pad as the Assos mile -- but is slightly cheaper, and looks & fits much better.
