Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

After a bunch of folly...It's here!! BMC Pro Machine

3 weeks ago, I ordered a 2010 BMC Pro Machine in the limited edition color. The BMC distributor confirmed they had one and only one in a size 55 and my LBS ordered it. Joe, the owner, tells me it would be about a week door to door. Knowing how all this works, I figure on two. Sure enough, a week later it still hadn’t shipped. The BMC distributor in Chicago can’t seem to locate the frame. They finally track it down at a rep’s house. I receive a tracking number showing that the shipping was billed on Monday, October 26th. Thursday, there is still no update on the UPS site, so Joe calls the distributor and finds that it is still “lost”. Just a theory here, but being their last one, me thinks the rep was hoping to keep my frame for himself . Anyway, the next day I receive an update from UPS with a scheduled delivery of Nov. 4th. Smooth sailing until Tuesday.

Joe calls me at work and tells me there’s a problem with getting my Easton cockpit and asks if I want to change it out. He assures me that it’ll be at the shop the same day the frame comes in. We plan on meeting at 4pm on Thursday for my pick up.

2:30 rolls around and I get a call from Joe. The handlebars aren’t in. The truck came by with his delivery, but the failed to unload my handlebars and stem. It’s driving around town and not doing me any good. He tells me he’s going to drive down to the warehouse as soon as the truck returns. He’ll call me later. 4:30 he calls me and says he’s heading out to the warehouse. 6:30 he calls with the bad news. For whatever reason, the handlebars haven’t come in. The good news is that the distributor has promised Joe that he’ll drive the handlebars over to his shop by 8:30. With all the delays I’m a little stressed about getting the bike built before my fitter shows up at my door the next day, but I’ll manage.

8:40, I get the call. Everything is here and Joe offers to do the build for me. Joe’s already put an 11 hour day in at the shop and I’m blown away by the generosity. By the time I get to the shop, about all that’s left to do is the cabling and adjustments.

Bar wraps and black Conti GP4000s will be added after my fitter leaves tonight. Steering tube will be cut after a few rides.

After all these winter parody threads, this is a welcome respite.

Thanks! Sweet ride.

Here's the finshed build

The seat tube lists all of the podium finishes the frame has had. Nice touch and not overly noticable.

Wow, awesome bike. I really like the names of all those races on the down tube (or is it on the seat tube, it looks like the FD is mounted under the inscription?). That would definitely provide some extra motivation to "live up to" the bike.

Yup, you're right. It's fixed. Guess I can attribute that to a lack of sleep over the last two days. I'll never live up to what the bike can do, but I can always dream and while suffering like a champion

You're going to love the ride of that bike. It's absolutely amazing in cornering. It just rips through technical turns. Truly the proverbial "on rails" feeling. First bike I've owned that I would buy again.

BMC has such awesome design. There's something about a font next to the same font in bold that is just so beautiful, especially with no capital letters. Sometimes it's painful to admit what a sucker I am for Helvetica.

Nice looking bike but I would prefer to 1. build it myself. 2. order things online. PBK has never mis-shipped anything to me.

Edit: also, you said you were getting an easton cockpit but all I see is fsa...

For some reason we found out on Tuesday afternoon that the Easton cockpit wasn't going to be available on Thursday, so I opted to give the FSA Kwing Carbon a shot and matched it with a SL-K stem. I wasn't real fond of the bold graphics on the bars, but the red does accent Red shifters and the white works well with the white rims. Shrug. Maybe it was meant to be.

And they say the Swiss don't have a sense of humour!

If the frame was stiff enough for Floyd on 'Roids it's more than I'll ever need.

To echo JoelS, this is one frame I'd buy again.

Ride safe.
