Broken Pelvis

I got in a wreck the other night and, after a few hours in the ER, found that my pelvis is broken. It's been almost three days and I can now walk with a cane without pain and navigate stairs slowly.

Has this happened to anyone else? How long until you were able to ride again? My base was going GREAT until his happened, but, thankfully, it's still super early in the season.

Thanks
James

I my pelvis , femur , and shattered my hip I a car wreck. After two surgeries and two weeks of radiation treatment I was sent home. I was on crutches for 6months but it was almost a year before I could walk normal again. Hopefully yours isn't as serious and u can be back on the bike in a couple months. Hope you heal well and quickly but don't push it till you do.

Hammon...I hope you heal quickly. Was this a bike wreck or a car wreck? If it was a bike wreck...how's the bike? ;)

x19...what was the radiation for?

Oh...and Hammon...seems to me that it's "super early in the season" because it's still the end of the previous season! ;)

Ow, sorry to hear it. My sister broke her pelvis in a bike crash a couple of years ago, she broke the sit bone. Took her 6 weeks to get back on the bike - she tried a little earlier and it was a total no-go, but after the 6 weeks (which was what the doc told her it would take) it was almost completely fine right away.

Heal fast.

I think you doctor would be a much better source of information. Heal fast.

Yep.

It all depends on where you broke it.

I crashed and broke my pelvis (and sternum) warming up for the start of a century on Labor Day. I immediately got back on the bike and rode the century in 4:52. Never missed a day on the bike, but putting on a seat belt was an exercise in pain and I had to sleep on my back for about four weeks. Your mileage WILL vary. Again, it all depends on your particular break. Mine didn't affect the hip socket.

Sorry to hear about your accident! My teammate broke her pelvis in two places earlier this year, and it healed pretty quickly. She was working out in about 6 weeks, and racing within 8 or so. Her fitness came back very quickly, but the confidence was a little slower going.

+1 to listening to your doctor.

It sounds like a fracture. I had such an injury in Aug 2009 - my leg got wrenched really hard in a tumble and it fractured two of the three pelvic bones on the right side of my body. First time I ever broke a bone, and I'd been racing 26 years at that point, mainly crits.

I was only slightly worse than you, wheelchair for about 2 weeks? cane for about 8 weeks

6-8 weeks for the bone to stitch or knit or whatever. Pain goes away in 12-16 weeks (bone is okay but it still aches). For me it was 8 weeks, 16 weeks.

I used the inactivity time (after 16 weeks) to diet. Ended up with the best season I ever had.

I have info on my blog at sprinterdellacasa.blogspot.com. Start here and look for a title that hints at crash, recovery, etc.

You'll be fine. Don't rush it and think of ways you can take advantage of the enforced layoff.

my friends dad, who is an avid cyclist, broke his hip and was out for 6 months.

Your return to biking might be based on how fast you heal. Hope you are a fast healer. Either way, sorry to hear about your accident and hope thinks continue to improve for you.
