Phone feels like it'll fly out of pocket

So, I've *always* kept my phone and my wedding ring in a ziplock in my left jersey pocket and I never felt like this stuff could jump out and get lost. BUT now I have an iPhone, which is both bigger and heavier than my previous tiny flipphone and THAT feels like all it would take would be a small bump in the road for its momentum to carry it up my back and out.

Has anyone actually experienced this (either it actually happening or at least the sense of a heavier phone sliding upward on bumps)? Ziplocks are kinda slippery, so I've tried wrapping rubber bands but unless I really covered it up with bands I don't think it'd help. And my jersey pockets are all *wide* open at the tops.

Any ideas?

My craft jersey has 3 regular pockets and one zippered in the middle which is perfect for this.

I wouldn't trust my iphone in the jersey pocket alone, just incase.

Or get a handlebar mount for the iphone and double the use as a GPS.

I have an iphone... carry it in my left jersey pocket... two years.... no problems.... yet.

Sometimes I leave it at home.

I keep my cell phone in a Bento Box with a zipper closure. Keeps it dry and safe.

Not sure if it helps or not but I ride with 5-6 jerseys of different brands and have never had a problem with my iphone falling out. I usually have it in the middle pocket by itself.

If you're that concerned just put a safety pin through the bag and connect it to the inside of the pocket.

3 things:

You can get a Bento box and put your phone (and keys) in it. That way, you will be able to actually SEE it during the ride. It's good piece of mind.

I use a bento box sometimes. I also use my jersey pockets (if I'm wearing a jersey) and my shorts pocket (if I'm wearing MTB shorts), and neither has been a problem.

If you're going to do the "wrapping it in a rubberband" thing, you could also double-over a piece of duct tape and stick it to the back of your phone. Then it will stick in your pocket pretty good.

I don't put my cell phone in my pocket for that reason: it could fall out. And one other: if you buy it really bad and land in a way that destroys your phone, you can't call someone to come and scrape you off the pavement.

If you're going to bother carrying a phone for any emergency, put it somewhere safe so it can be used in such cases.

your jersey is too big.

I wear race-fit jerseys and lost a phone out of my pocket, but it was on a 20% grade descent, and I was tucked sternum-on-stem at the time. It slid out of my pocket, up my back, and off to the road in front of me.

Since that accident, I just slip my phone (Droid Incredible ~ iPhone size/value) under the rubber band that binds my spare tube. The tube isn't sliding out of there, and the phone hasn't budged since.

Not to be mean, but why do you bother carrying your wedding ring with you on bike rides?

I've also got a iP4 and store it on the right pocket with the Apple black bumper. The grip from the rubber on the bumper is enough to stop it from sliding at all. Even when I'm wearing my vest, which has larger than normal pockets, the phone stays put.

Throw a piece of velcro on the pocket top/center it if you're really worried. Otherwise it doesn't matter. If you lose the phone and ring there's no phone call you could possibly want to answer.

aaah, saddle bag?

desertdork 11-05-10 04:08 PM

I have an Otterbox Defender case on my 3GS. The case is covered with a silicone/rubber/something skin. Enough grip that it's sometimes annoying retrieving it from a pocket. May work for you, but I don't know what's available for iP4.

This. Race cut jerseys of the appropriate size work well.

Mine goes in a plastic bag with ID, money, and stuff. It ain't goin' anywhere.

I've only had my phone (loose in the middle pocket) fly out of my pocket once... when my front wheel exploded and sent me over the bars. It landed on the ground in front of me and was fine.

Good idea. I keep my health insurance card and tire lever in that rubber band also.

I'm assuming by the way you've asked the question that you don't use or have space in a saddle bag for it. No saddle bag is an option, however, if you get into a crash, a saddle bag is a much safer place for the phone than the jersey pocket. If you are concerned about it flying out, I'd assume you'd be concerned about it breaking in a crash. Just something to think about.

ditto.. get a saddle bag for it. I realize saddlebags arent the most glamorous, I hated the day I mounted mine but I hate carrying tools in my jersey. I'm always afraid if I crash something will puncture me.

M_FactorX19 11-05-10 05:56 PM

I care my blackberry storm (looks like iphone ) in my left jersey pocket and it hasn't fallen out yet. I use to put it in my saddle bag but don't anymore since it got all scratched up after a ride from being in there with the other things I need. Even with a hard protective case they don't cover the glass screen and the screen protectors only do so much. If I happen to crash or it falls out while riding that's why I have insurance on it so I won't be out much. But the handle bar mount is a nice idea.

Get a pocket holster (for a gun) that fits your phone. They're designed to keep heavy things in a static position in your pocket. Uncle Mike's holsters are cheap and work well.

Ritterview 11-05-10 10:44 PM

Mine has never bumped out, but my iPhone4 came out of my pocket while I was extracting something else, and the glass broke. That'll cost me $150, and I'll get a more protective case.

Forza 11-05-10 10:47 PM

Uh huh...I now be sure to buy jerseys with zippered pockets...

Yaniel 11-05-10 10:55 PM

mine has never fallen out, even after a crash. it just sits in a ziplock in my pocket and has never even felt like it might fall out in all sorts of jerseys.
