So I was riding in Prospect Park in a peloton today...

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So I was riding in Prospect Park in a peloton today...

I was riding along on my Cervelo R 2.5 ( 17.8 pounds with Spinergy wheels ), doing some intervals for a while, 23.4 mph average, you know, getting my base miles in ( 70 of 'em today ), and then it was time to wind the workout down. So after I did 62.4 miles, I slowed and was doing more of a recovery ride.

I saw a guy in a jersey with R something DuraAce embroidered into his jersey, in a bold font. Now I was just doing a quick spin ( 94 rpm ) but not putting too much power to the pedals ( 134w ), letting my body cool off but not being totally lazy. Anyway, this guy roars like Conan the Barbarian, and comes up past me, saying "MUST TEACH FRED A LESSON" over and over again. What the hell? I'm doing a slow 16.4 mph, and this guy buzzes me real close like he's a taxi. I'd guess he was going at least 17 mph.

When he passed me, the cyclist looked back, and kind of gave me a sneer. I think he was trying to get me to do some MUP racing, but I'd already put in a pretty good day, wanted to be alert when I saw my girlfriend later, and had plans for a group ride tomorrow. So I didn't take the bait. Anyway, I continue along, wrapping up my workout, and a while later, this guy comes by again, with sweat dripping from his entire face. When he passed me this time, he screamed "I LAPPED YOU, FRED FOOL!" I yelled back "ok." He seemed to take that as a provocation, and said something about his friends elbow and pavement.

Just as I was leaving the park, I saw this guy come by one more time. He reached down and grabbed a can of Coke from the bottle cage, and opened it while he was flying down the path, but the soda kind of blew up. The rider was so startled he crashed. He was yelling at the coke can for being an idiot, not holding its line, this and that, then picked the soda can up and said "I just introduced you to my friend Pavement."

I think the rider was either on drugs, or sustained damage to the brain which may have affected the frontal cortex. The repetitive responses and conversation with a inanimate object suggest some type of medical condition. At the end of the day - best to stay away.

I did a lotta laps around that stupid park in the past couple of years. My last race there was 14 or 15 (can't remember, I was whirling out after lap 11).

A teenager was half-eaten by a polar bear at the Prospect Park zoo a number of years ago. Weird and almost violent seems to be par for the course.

The oddest experience I ever had racing in Prospect was the massive cloud of second hand pot smoke wafting over the little hill every time we climbed it during one May or June race back in the mid 1990's. So help me the whole friggin peloton would have tested positive for PCP that day, it was unbelievable. 7AM on a Sunday and the Crown Heights Rasta Crew are out there smoking massive spleefs just off the side of the race course.

Note to Mods: don't use this as an excuse to move this thread to the MTB Forum.

A family sitting under a tree in Prospect Park was electrocuted to death a number of ago. Surreal and weird are normal for this park. They were not smoking ganga though they did leave a fair amount of smoke.

THC. They would have tested positive for THC. PCP is Angel Dust.

Hey, wtf, I did all those stupid drugs. I'm still here.

My pleasure. It helps that I frequented the Haight-Ashbury as a kid.
