Dura Ace c24 cl - maiden voyage ride report

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Dura Ace c24 cl - maiden voyage ride report

35 mile maiden voyage of Dura Ace c24 cl wheels, on Cervelo RS. I'm totally impressed! I'm an avid, but not very strong middle aged cyclist. So to be perfectly honest, I can't really tell whether the wheels flexed or not. The wheels replaced a set of Easton Orion 2's - also pretty light wheels with a very smooth rolling hub.

I found the difference in ride quality pretty amazing. Maybe it's the newer tires, or 5 lbs less air in each wheel. But they simply soaked up so much chip and seal road chatter, while still feeling very responsive. To say I'm impressed is an understatement. And, although I could feel the gusts of 20+ mph wind, I could still control the steering quite well.

Too bad I never had a chance to test out the Zipp 101 wheels (the other wheels I was considering), but those would have costed at least 250 more, with each rim weighing approx 100g more. Absolutely no regrets. Love them to death. I can imagine how good the RS 80's would feel if looking for a lower priced set.

Anyway, if you're looking for wheels, they're definitely worth considering.

Congrats on the new wheels! Love mine as well. You'd be hard pressed to find a better "factory" wheel set, though they're supposedly handmade in Malaysia.

I'm interested to hear what you think of them on descents - whether you can induce front end shimmy easier than your previous wheelset. This has been the only issue I've had with mine - otherwise they're a great set of wheels for the lighter rider.

Umm...what does "front end shimmy" mean? I weigh 163 so wouldn't consider myself lightweight.

I mean the kind of side-to-side wobble you can get in the steering on a fast descent if you're heavy-handed with it or you hit a bump. Not sure what the technical term is.

By "lighter rider" I meant that I wouldn't recommend the wheels for someone 200lbs plus. I'm only 150 and not particularly strong or anything, but I wouldn't want them to flex any more than they do. I find them stiff enough (just) but in a different league from something like Fulcrum Racing 1s or 3s. The tradeoff is you get a much nicer ride with the DAs. I read a review somewhere describing it as "plush" and I think that's a good description.

I have the same wheels. They are spectacular and surprisingly aerodynamic for a low-profile rim.

I have the Ultegra version of these wheels...ride great and the price of about $500 is reasonable...I like the fact that you don't need to switch to "carbon" brake pads whenever you ride these wheels

I've been thinking pretty hard on a set of these myself. (Completely in love with my C50's, but they're almost a full pound heavier than the C24's.)

Fine, fine. Here are some pics I took this morning. Also upgraded the shifter to Red (from 2008 Force) and the r/d & f/d to 2010 Force. Really couldn't justify the extra cost for Red on the r/d & f/d as they were more than double the cost of Force. The Red shifter - about $80 more vs. Force - I bit the bullet just for vanity.

And no, I won't flip it. I'm a middle-aged almost 40 year old that doesn't race. Don't have the flexibility of you young ones.

I have been using these wheels since Spring... much better than the Aksiums they replaced. Pretty robust too, I have put maybe 3-4k on them so far in various road and weather conditions. Front wheel needed truing after a crash but that's it. I will be putting the Aksiums back on when it starts snowing though, don't want to subject the CL-24s to further abuse in the Winter.
