Avg Speed
Does anybody else has this issue?
My avg speed on the road is faster than when I am on the KK trainer. I would assume that the road would be slower because of Red light and stop signs, but this is not the case. Am I tightening the knob on the trainer too tight? If I use less resistance the wheel slips. |
You may want to invest in one of these...

The speed on your trainer, as it relates to the road is completely irrelevant.
The only reason you would even care about speed on the trainer is if you're using the KK power curve to estimate your power. So don't worry about how it correlates to the road. You should be measuring your efforts on the trainer by time and intensity. And you measure the intensity by perceived effort, HRM or a power meter, in order of preference. Again the only way you would use speed on the trainer is to estimate power against a known power curve. And what that curve says will likley have little relevance to your power at a given speed on the road. |

OP...don't pay much attention to the correlation between the trainer and the road. Get yourself a good cheap computer for your road bike. If you can average more than 14 mph without stopping, you should turn pro. |

As others have said, speed on the trainer is arbitrary and will vary depending on the make and model of trainer used. |

The trainer is there to simulate a ride on the road, but is not exactly like riding on the road. nothing beats the real thing!... the feeling varies from trainer to trainer as well as the effort you put in. (me personally cannot spend more then an 90 min. on mine) I think the trainer is harder to ride than the road.(using similar gears) so just ride your bike as much as you can outdoors, and when you ride indoors enjoy it! (have workout plan; intervals, climb reps, etc, etc..) and try not to focus too much on Avg Speed!!:thumb: |
Damn! I've got to work on my speed!.... I thought I was going to be the first one to respond!

...one can never get enough of the average speed threads |
I can.

Average speed is largely unimportant indoors but of supreme importance outdoors. Be sure to post a myriad of average speed-related questions here in the spring.
|
I checked my average speed after a long ride this weekend. With over 4K feet of climbing and descending in equal amounts, my average speed should have been much higher than it was. I was disappointed.
|
Just try to maintain your outdoor average speed while on some small diameter rollers.... You will be slower than ever.

I'm going with "knob is too tight".
