Vincero Design - Magnetic Water Bottle Holders

What do you guys think?

Brilliant innovation or marketing fad?

Believe it or not I have thought about doing this myself with magnets stolen from my physics lab....I say brilliant, simple, but its gonna turn unto a marketing fad.

I can tell you an easy way to do it though. Just search amazon for neodymium magnets. you can get a pack of em for like 12 bucks. Find a way to mount them and your good.

But otherwise I actually think this idea is pretty cool aslong as they do it right and don't make it some ridiculous price (which they will).

16g for the mounts and 85g for the bottle. Weight weenies would approve.

I just can't believe this can hold a bottle tight enough not to eject it on bumpy roads.

Yeah, I'm having difficulty understanding how a 16g magnet holds about 800 grams of water and bottle, particularly over bumps.

+1

If it can hold the water bottle over bumps, I'm wondering how difficult will it be to reach down and actually separate the magnets to use the bottle.

I'm just thinking what a PITA it's going to be to rotate the bottle to make the magnets meet. With a cage orientation doesn't matter...

This is why even if I had tons of money to blow, I'd still not buy the latest stuff until other guinea pigs tried it out first.

I used to be anal retentive and always replace my bottles with the logos facing out. It's not difficult to do, and I imagine it would be even easier with a slot and magnet guiding you.

Do a search on Correlated Magnetics and Larry Fullerton.

It looks like the bottle is recessed so that it nests on the frame bar. That would keep the bottle from slipping off or rotating, but it looks like you could remove the bottle easily. My issues would be the strengtt of the magnet versus being able to pull the bottle out and the ease of which one could align the bottle to put it back.

Looks really nice but too pricey to be a guinea pig, and since I don't ride on perfectly paved roads I'd be concerned about how they hold up when you hit pot holes.

merlinextraligh 11-15-10 02:07 PM

I don't want to be "that guy" who loses one in a corner in a race, and takes the pack down.

Why fix something that aint broke?

Cheaper, works, guaranteed.

Next, they'll put a microchip into the water bottle that syncs up to your Garmin and power meter that will tell you when to drink.

People's stupidity often is said to have no limits but I'll lose hope in humanity if this idea takes off...

You realize that this statement makes absolutely no sense, right?

DScott 11-15-10 02:16 PM

Another useless gadget for people who never actually ride their bikes.

Can't wait to see the cranksets this "design group" comes up with...

...so much for a neutral feed. Or getting a bottle from a buddy.

Just in common experience, a magnet that small doesn't seem to generate enough force to hold up 800 grams of weight, and deal with whatever additional forces are acting on the bottle when you hit a signifcant bump.

I'm sure the answer depends on the strength of the magnet. I'll leave it to the engineers to figure out the math. I'm just skeptical its going to really be reliable in practice.

merlinextraligh 11-15-10 02:58 PM

One other thought, if it relies on a very strong magnet to work, is that going to be any issue with interfering with wheel and cadence sensors?

and you can't use a Gatorade bottle, or bottled water from a convenience store if you forget your bottles.

Even if there was no way you could pull it straight off it wouldn't be that hard to slide, and once you moved it a little the force exerted by the magnet would drop rapidly. Still a solution to a problem that doesn't exist, and I agree w/ RTC about the orientation being another thing I don't really want to deal with.
