Goofy helmet question
What is it with people who keep their helmets on even when they get off the bike? Just wondering. I was looking through some bike magazines and online articles and was wondering why so many people are walking around, eating dinner, sitting in cafes wearing their helmets. As soon as I get off my bike, the helmet comes off. What is this love affair with the helmet?

Helmet hair! :D

I usually take mine off but sometimes I forget. Get a nice high end helmet and you can't really tell its even there.

Some riders look better with the helmet on:

Pictures in magazines don't necessarily depict reality.

Did you know you're 2.5 times more likely to die of a slip-and-fall on a sidewalk than while riding a bike?
Did you also know that 87.4% of all statistics are completely made up? |
Hey OP,
Post a pic of you with your goofy helmet. Thanks. |

Funny.
I did a ride this weekend, and there was a "lunch" rest stop that served boiled shrimp and other things. My buddy sent me a picture of myself sitting at a picnic table peeling and eating shrimp with my helmet AND my gloves on. I just don't think about it. I did have the helmet strap unbuckled though. I would never go shopping or to eat in a "real" place wearing it, but I never take it off at rest stops on rides though. Actually, putting a wet helmet back on your dry head is pretty nasty, so I'd rather just keep it on. One thing that I can't figure out is the way so many people wear their helmets with the straps so loose or so crooked that it wouldn't protect them at all from anything. It just looks uncomfortable and awkward. I figure if I'm gonna wear this big thing on my head, I may as well wear it correctly. I'll also never understand really loose and saggy saddle bags, but that's a whole other thread. |

The sun always shines reason 1) Show that helmets are part of what ever cyclist should wear. Help get the safety message out. Cynic reason 2) helmet manufactures want to try to sell more helmets and cooler (read expensive) so there is subtle advertising throughout the magazine for them. I choice a little of both. |
I used to laugh when my daughter would get off her bike and start playing on the swing set and forget to take off her helmet.
