Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wheel build for a 190 lb rider

Looking to build a wheelset for fast group rides.
White industries H2 front 24 spoke 2x
White industries H3 rear 28 spoke 2x
Velocity A23 rims
DT comp spokes
Brass nipples all around
Is this a good build for around $600? Durability? Weight?
Read alot on this fourm about Kinlin rims, is this an option?
Can you give me a better build in this price range?

I'm the same weight and riding 24x28 spoke wheelset with Kinlin XR-300 rims, WI hubs, and Sapim CX Ray spokes, 2x in rear, radial in the front. Built them myself. About 8000 miles on the wheels...still perfectly true with no problems. The wheels perform perfectly fine, but if I were to build these wheels again, the only change I would make would be to use a stiffer spoke on the rear drive side. DT Comps should be plenty stiff.

Edit: WI hubs are good hubs, but you could shave several hundred dollars off your proposed build by choosing cheaper Novatec hubs or some similar Tiawanese hub.

I'm 183 and am just about to build a new pair of wheels close to what you are considering:

White industries H2 front 32 spoke 3x
White industries H3 rear 36 spoke 3x
Velocity Aerohead rims (O/C in the rear)
DT comp spokes
Brass nipples all around

Mine are the same as above, great wheels, 3k miles on mine.

IMO, the titanium freehub on WI or DA hubs is a better choice compared to the 70xx series aluminum freehubs on the novatec hubs, especially for riders that can put down a lot of power.

I'd go for DT RR415 over aeroheads and keep the spoke count high.

high spoke count wheels can be made lighter and or more durable than low.

That wheelset will work for you. Kinlin rims are also an option, and I would choose XR-270 for you. The XR-270 rims may be a little stiffer than the A23 rims. In terms of ride quality, I like A23 rims. The way a 23mm tire is shaped on those rims seems to dramatically improve the ride quality for me. In your price range you have lots of options.

In terms of weight, they are not very light, but not too bad at about 1600 grams.

OP's getting a bit heavy for RR415s on the rear. I'm 205 or so and pulled some spokes right through a 32-hole RR415 rear wheel a couple of months ago.

I'd say RR465 for the rear, RR415 for the front.

I totally agree that an RR415 on the rear is not ideal. The RR465 is a great rim if OP is okay with a 32 spoke wheelset, but at that spoke count the A23 rims are still my choice.

Velocity Rims make for durable wheelsets, but imo they're heavy. I feel like Kinlin XR-300s would be good enough and faster.

It depends on the rim. A23 and Aerohead are lighter than XR-300s. Deep-V is heavier.

how much do the A23 weigh?

Aerohead weighs in at around 430g and never under.

If the prices are similar, I'd still go for kinlin or DT swiss.
My encounters with velocity rims were always mediocre.

A23 rims are advertised at 426 grams, but are more like 435 grams. Really, the weight difference between all the rims we are discussing is within 30 grams and shouldn't sway the decision.

Thanks for the input! I like the idea of the A-23"s for the ride quailty, the WI hubs mainly for the looks as I"m building a Lynsky Ti but a little confused on how to build a lighter wheelset using more spokes.Should i go 28-32 with lighter spokes using a different lacing pattern? My current build is about 1600grams ,but how can I get to 1500 and still be reliable at my weight?
Thanks

The difference in weight by using a different lacing pattern is minimal.

28/32 with CX-Ray spokes will be fine. Keep in mind wheels with thinner spokes are not quite as stiff as wheels with 14/15 gauge spokes. You will be at about 1500 grams with 28/32 CX-Ray spokes, A23 rims, WI hubs, and aluminum nipples. I would choose cross-3 for the rear and cross-2 or cross-1 for the front. Sapim Laser spokes are about the same weight as CX-Rays and cost less.

You may want to consider a compromise and use DT Competition or Sapim Race spokes with brass nipples on the rear drive side.

just to toss my 0.02 in on the heap:

I built up a 24H A23 and really like the rim. Velocity has pretty good QC as far as I can tell, and the wider tire is noticeable.
