Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Speedplay yes/no?

Getting a new bike in a few weeks. Convince me why I should or should not get Speedplay's.

I like mine due to the amount of float available and it is two-sided. Have been riding them for three years now!

On the zeros you can dial the float from fixed to 15 degrees. FWIW, double sided entry is very nice. Spent 1 day on Look Keos and took them back for my Speedplays.

If you have knee issues, the float can help eliminate.

This really is a topic where you want to use the search function. There's a lot of information here, and most folks aren't going to type detailed responses to a generic speed play yes/no question, when they've done it 20 times already.

Yes, Speedplay Zeros. You can take out as much float as you want.

I am aware. I was looking for a little more convincing. Thanks anyway.

Same here. I spent three weeks on SPD-SL pedals and sold them on Ebay. I have been using Speedplay pedals for 4 years now and it is unlikely I will ever use another brand of pedals.

Yes I currently do. I am on a bike that is one size too big for me, right now. So, I am not sure if it is from the bike or something float could help.

And what argument could anyone possibly make to convince you that isn't covered ad infinitum in the existing 100 threads?

Perhaps if you had a particular issue, people would respond. There are a handful of arguments for speedplays, and a handful against. You have to figure which ones matter to you.

Not trying to be a dick about it. I'm just suggesting there are better threads with more detailed information already on here, than your very generic post is likey to generate.

You do not have to read threads if you don't want to. It is posts like yours that make people afraid to post threads.

Well, perhaps people shouldn't post another "Speedplay: Yes/No" thread.

It adds nothing to the forum, and doesn't even get you the information you want.

If you use the search function, read a couple of good speedpaly threads, then you could post a thread that elicits information to build on those threads, or tailor them to your needs.

That could be good for you and the forum overall.

I realize I don't have to respond to your thread. However, if you paused to consider my response, you might realize that it is actually helpful.

OK

Pros: double sided entry, variable float (you can set it to where you want it), light (if you go with the Ti),

Cons: needs some maintaining (lubing your cleats), cleats can wear out fairly quickly, impossible to walk on the cleat, can gunk up if you are in messy terrain(may be hard to clip in/out if your cleat gets dirty), the cleats take some breaking in before it is easy to clip in/out.

I have them for 18 months now, and love them. I have only had one problem with them when I did a charity ride on a rainy day and got mud in my cleat. No biggie.

Now this I can respond to.

I have the Speedplay Light Action pedals and they are extremely easy to clip in and out of.

I have never, gummed them up, not even once but then I don't ride in conditions where I would experience mud.

In four years I have changed cleats once and mainly because they were just feeling a little loose. The cleats are made of metal and should last longer than plastic cleats.

Also, if you coat the cleats with Shoe Goo, they are very easy to walk in.

Yep, it would be, if I had not already done it. I appreciate your help anyway. BTW, do a search for speedplay in bikeforums.net. It pulls up the oh so helpful addiction thread and tons of other non-related threads.

I know what adds to this thread! Another pic of my bike complete with Speedplays, which you can't see since they're so small.

This is the thing that makes me so interested in speedplays. People are so enthusiastic about them. I have not loved my look style pedals.

I can walk in the cleats, so there may be some individual variations on that count.

1) read umd's search thread.

2) use a little imagination. Try "which clip less speed play" and you'll get relevant content.

Some thought in your searches and your thread posts will improve the s/n ratio.

I'm using the cleat covers and can walk around fine with them. I just keep the pair in the back of my jersey.

Do an advanced search and use my name as the thread starter. I have been using SPD-SLs for the past 8 months and I had some very specific questions about Speedplays because I had such a damn hard time getting into them from a stop.

Tons of great advice in that thread.

By the way, my SPD-SLs just needed more time. I can get into them almost every time the first time. I still may try some Speedplays when I get my nice new carbon R3 or SuperSix.
