Cycling in Quintana Roo, Mexico

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Not there specifically (I live in Mexico) but just to warn you, cycling on highways is very dangerous here nobody cares about you or if you get killed.

Cyclists down here usually have a van following them around holding up traffic so they don't get run over, that's what my "club" does, I recently heard about 2 member getting run over.

My wife and I went all over Quintana Roo this past summer. Of all of the things that I love about that place that make me want to retire there (Tulum Beach...amazing), the lack of safe road cycling would really be a tough one. Hwy 307 was the nicest road, but it looked incredibly dangerous for cycling. The Coba highway was less busy and the host of the B&B that we stayed at says that he does ride down it at times. He did say that he had run into "trouble" on more than one occassion.

Like any place, it's probably a matter of exploring and finding suitable places. Assuming you (the OP) is American, remember that cyclists don't have the rights there that they have here and that the infrastructure in general (roads) is nothing compared to what we have in the US.

My feelings exactly. When we go to Playa del Carmen, we fantasize about riding our bikes out of PDC with our snorkel gear and going to Akumal to spend the day with our friends and the turtles, then riding back to Playa. It's actually on my "bucket list", but it's not gonna happen unless I already have a terminal diagnosis. :-)

I adore the area, and it's one of my favorite places on the planet. But I haven't really found an area where I would feel even a little comfortable going for a good ride. Cancun had a big road cycling event last month (that the Schleck brothers participated in) that we want to do next year. So there may be better roads around Cancun to ride...I don't know though, I only use it for the airport.
