Mavic Cosmic Carbone SLR Wheelset - Clincher

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I too bought the SLRs. My reasoning though was the MP3 plan, which will replace my wheels free in the event of a crash. I've seen too many carbon wheels trashed in various crashes.

I e-mailed bonktown directly after I purchased the wheels and they added the MP3 plan to my order.

I wanted to go with Hed wheels, but Hed doesn't have a crash warranty like Mavic and Reynolds.

It's something like 7-10% of the purchase price for 2 years. I payed something like $150 but I also bought the wheels retail. Just remember to keep your original receipt and MP3 plan printout.

Are you having buyer's remorse already?
They are two, completely different wheels. FWIW, I think the CC SLRs are way better for 2 main reasons (in order of importance):
- Look better (no garish REYNOLDS logo)
- Aluminum braking surface

I looked hard at those wheels when they were on Bonktown. Decided I didn't want to mess with proprietary carbon spokes...yuck. Otherwise they seem pretty awesome, especially at that price.

This is like the Campagnolo argument that their stuff can be rebuilt.

I just bought some Campagnolo stuff for the first time but I wouldn't want to have to rebuild in the first place--same thing with wheel truing. I'd rather have the stuff just work.

I wonder if anyone had experienced the spoke breaking and how much they cost?

Not having buyers remorse, but a $1,000 is a lot of money and wanted to make sure.

Still have the hots for Zipp 404 Firecrest but at less than half the cost I think I made the right choice.

And MAVIC can be piggy about replacement parts. Their aluminum spokes already cost an arm and a leg.

With carbon spokes, it's gonna be an arm, a leg and one of your b*lls.

FWIW, my CC SLRs survived a pretty big crash, rain, snow, etc. The only negative I have about them is that the spokes can make a weird noise from compressing and it's very sporadic. The wheels will go on months fine and then all of a sudden start making the noise again.

MP3 Plan is 8 percent of MSRP, so it was $160 for the CC SLRs even on Bonktown.

And I have been told the carbon spokes on the SLRs are not replaceable - they break, wheel is done. So, that is why I made sure I got the MP3 plan.

Still, they're pretty beefy spokes.

I'll let you know how they ride after Christmas - they're technically a Christmas present from my wife, but that didn't stop me from opening the box last weekend and checking them out when the arrived.

Great information, I will get the plan as well thank you. Is Bonktown a authorize dealer that can sell the plan?

the slr spokes are truable and replaceable. not sure how much they cost but you can get a broken spoke replaced. picked up these wheels on bonktown as well. maybe 200 miles on them already. pretty satisfied. nice clean understated look. plenty stiff, quiet freewheel, easily manageable in strong winds... solid braking, just light enough... tires go on relatively easily as well.

Thanks for the clarification, lowlife. I have not spent much time with mine - I'm not allowed to ride them until after Christmas.

And yes, Bonktown is an authorized dealer.

Got mine yesterday. They only come with one valve extender and it's junk. Either have some 80mm tunes or a good valve externder (s) handy.

I email Bonktown and they seem clueless asking me for a item number. Do you have the item number for the MP3?
