Mavic Cosmic Carbone SLR Wheelset - Clincher

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sorta what I was thinking . The weight weenie in me can't believe that I'd want wheels that are 150 grams more than my Souls though.

I mounted the tires today and man what bear, it seems like the rims are bigger than my old rims. It took me a hour to mount the tires and I have mounted many tires.

well that's not good. any follow through on why that might have been? that's gonna kill ya if you have a flat (I'm assuming you got clinchers, right?)

Yes they are clinchers. I think the diameter of the outer edge of rim is bigger. They seated just fine but the space between the edge and seat seems large. I originally tried to mount a folding tire and that was a non-starter. I ended-up mounting Gators which have a wire bead and that worked better.

I plan to post pictures once they are on the bike but still waiting for the cassette to be delivered.

I use Pedro's levers to get the tires on.

Also, I just wanted to clear up the "noise" I was experiencing for over a year:
https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ighlight=noise

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ighlight=noise
My mechanic amazingly figured out the problem today.

I was having problems with the CC SLRs since day one (over 18 months ago). The rear wheels would make a weird noise only when I was seated and pedaling. I thought it was one of the spokes (non-drive-side) because it had much looser tension than the other NDS spokes. The bike would not make this noise with other wheelsets.

The noise was also worse during the winters. It got to a point where I wanted to either use the MP3 program or chuck the rear wheel into a ditch as you can imagine a constant pinging noise while on a routine, bi-weekly 85 mile ride.

Since it's winter, there are less people at the LBS and my mechanic thoroughly checked out the bike for cracks, evened up the tension on the spokes, checked the dropouts, skewers, seat-post and put the wheels on another bike. He amazingly found out that an obscure screw on the rear droup-out area was slightly loose and combined with the CC SLR wheel-set (only this wheel-set for some reason) would echo and amplify throughout the bike!

No mechanic could figure this out, not even Pcad's supposed holy mechanics. Only Gerald (I would be confident in saying he is one of top 3 mechanics in NYC) down at obscure Sheepshead Cycles could figure it out. This guy has always done amazing work, plus he is just a super nice guy!

But seriously, a screw!?

What did the noise turn out to be?

Slightly loose right bearing cup in the BB, good thing I caught it early too. I've been to Sheepshead Cycles but since I rarely ride out to Brooklyn anymore it's been a while.

I just purchased the Cad 10 from Sheepshead Cycle. Allen seems like a nice guy and gives a fair fitting.

He's the owner; honestly, the only thing that separates one LBS from another is service, because they cannot really compete based on price IMO, especially toward an informed shopper.

Sheepshead has one of the best mechanics around. That's what makes it a good LBS IMO.

I rarely take my bike in for wrenching (because Gerald and the other mechanics taught me a lot of things) but when I do, I'm confident he can figure it out.

I like Pedros levers because they are beefier than other plastic levers.

man, mounting on the tires the first time was very tough. But I can now do it without much of a fuss -

two things : Chuck that crapass Mavic Rim tape and get something super thin like the zipp red liner - even a 1mm thickness difference makes a big difference around the entire circumference of the tire.

Use the supplied tire lever and if you really want to buy one , find something as close to the mavic one as possible, the flat shape really helps get it under there. Working 1" from the edge of the 'mounting zone' you can get even gp4000s on there in a couple of tries.

Hope that helps -

I just got mine off BT, will post pics soon.

On another note, is there a more direct way of contacting BT to buy the MP3 program? They haven't responded to two emails now.

The wheels come with a bearing adjustment tool that has a tire lever on the other end. I was actually able to get a tire on using just this the other day.

@v70cat- Thanks, i will contact them today

Still don't have my new cassette that I ordered from Wiggles on 12-3. They said that it can take up to 15 days for the item to arrive and they don't have a tracking number.
