There's an App for That
Hey all,
With the explosion of smart phones in the past year or so there have been a lot of great fitness apps released. Thought I'd start a thread on what some of the favorites are. My favorite so far is Cardio Trainer on my DroidX. I haven't checked but I think it might be an Android specific app. I did a quick browse on my iPhone (yes I have both) and didn't see it in the app store. First of all Cardio Trainer was the first fitness app I tried that didn't kill the phone's battery in about an hour. I've actually gone on four hour rides and not come close to killing a completely charged battery. Also it will automatically upload your workout (I think to several different sites - I just use their default and facebook. It's a great way to swap routes with friends). It also tracks pace, split times, and elevation gain. It also guestimates your calories burned (not sure how accurate that can be). You can also set it up for different types of workouts, such as running vs. biking. It also has audio queues that tell you verbally your pace and speed at certain intervals. That feature even integrates with your music player (even Pandora) on your phone by lowering the music a tad when the audio performance queue is played. Overall it seems to be a very feature rich application. Best part is the price - the thing is a free app. :) The price is right. If anyone knows of anything they like better I'm all ears though. I haven't tried them all. |
wow, a workout app, really.

not sure what you mean - dude, it's almost like getting a Garmin for free.
|
I use My Tracks (android).
Basically does what cardiotrainer does. |
Cyclemeter is great.

yeah i was using cardiotrainer for a while. awesome app that gives lots of good info...for free! the only thing i don't like is that you don't have instant access to the info unless you keep your phone mounted. personally, i don't like mount devices that large on the stem/bars/frame. i was just gifted a garmin edge 500, which does pretty much all i wanted while also being considerably smaller than my android phone and also is much easier to mount and use while riding. still, i'll use my phone for mapping routes while i'm out there.

Went back to a blackberry, and yesterday, i went and picked up the droid x....WOW...what a difference a year makes. I am totally impressed. Motorola has come a long way since the Motorola Droid...now I am going to download a few of these apps, and see which one i like the most. |

I did not like Cardio Trainer as much as Endomondo. But based on the feature set you listed for Cardio Trainer there are at lease 5 others that do all those same things w/out killing the battery. BTW these apps are not the killer of power as much as WiFi, GPS & 3G on all the time...

Cyclemeter for iOS. Still looking for the ideal iPhone mount however. I usually just start the app and toss the phone in my jersey pocket and forget about it. It now has a function where it analyzes for and compensates for time spent stopped. I find it usually tracks my Bike Computer on ride time within about 15-20 seconds.
I also use LoseIt to track my calorie intake and exercise. I often credit this app with helping me lose 40 pounds - and keeping it off now for over a year. |

I have used MyTracks on my Android, until I went for a couple of rides and it had stopped sometime during the ride, so it never gave me the full details of the ride. Then I used MapMyRide, but it kills the battery in a little over two hours. Now I just use my VDO cyclometer and log it in BikeJournal when I get home.

How broad is this thread going to be, anyway? I'd add an app for the Bixi-based bikesharing program we have in DC now. Bixou has Lite and paid versions, and Spotcycle is my app of choice at the moment. |

I like runkeeper on my droid. Free version tracks pace, speed, elevation and maps route. Uploads with more detailed info to their website and facebook if you wish.

I've used MyTracks on my Motorola Droid. I just use it to record the ride (display off) otherwise it eats into my battery life. don't use it often though on rides since I already have a Garmin.
JRona, is the DroidX that much better than the Droid? |
