Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Furnace Creek 508 2011 Race Magazine cover boy...

Is this the cover for the 2011 Furnace Creek 508 race magazine? AdventureCORPS has made a photo of me available for download as desktop wallpaper. It is one of my favorite photos from the 2010 Furnace Creek 508 taken by Marcus Edvalson. He captured me approximately 350 miles into the race, in between Shoshone Time Station #4 at mile 326 and Baker Time Station #5 at mile 382. I am secretly hoping that my photo makes the cover of the 2011 Furnace Creek 508 race magazine. If you feel the same, please take the time to post a comment here on Bike Forums, post a comment on my blog or Facebook! Or click-thru the links provide for AdventureCORPS and the Furnace Creek 508

about the Furnace Creek 508

"AdventureCORPS, an event production firm specializing in ultra-endurance and extreme sports events, will host the 28th Anniversary Furnace Creek 508 Bicycle Race in early October, 2011. Founded by John Marino in 1983 and known as "The Toughest 48 hours in Sport," it is the world's premier ultramarathon bicycle race. This 508-mile bicycle race is revered the world over for its epic mountain climbs, stark desert scenery, desolate roads, and its reputation as one of the toughest but most gratifying endurance challenges available, bar none. The course has a total elevation gain of over 35,000', crosses ten mountain passes, and stretches from Santa Clarita (just north of Los Angeles), across the Mojave Desert, through Death Valley National Park and Mojave National Preserve, to Twentynine Palms. Solo, two-person relay, and four-person relay divisions are offered with a field limit of app. 200 racers."

I'd prefer a hot woman on the cover, but whatever. j/k that is a very nice shot, showing the determination and struggle on your face.

That's a great shot, but why does it name you as Vireo? Will the final version have your real name on it?

My user name on Bike Forums is Vireo because my Furnace Creek 508 race totem is the Red Eyed Vireo. At the 508 we don't use bib numbers we have totems. Within the small 508 community we go by our totems and not by our names. Yes probably a little silly but we like it that way!

Hi Vireo,

Nicely done -- the photo and your ride. I'll try to stop by and see you before the year is out.

Riding 509 miles in under 48 hours, they'll take as many available positions as they can get!

Cool cover Vireo. Funny this was posted... a friend of mine wants me to do this with him next year. I told him no way. That is a hardcore ride.

A two man team isn't so bad. I think the only hard part for a relay team is not being able to switch riders whenever you want. Each rider must finish the entire time station. You also have to crew yourself which could take a drain on you throughout the event. But if you aren't going for the course record it's significantly easier than going solo. Look at the time stations below, as long as you train to ride fairly hard for about 4 hours and can recover in 4 hours and then go again for 4 hours and recover in 4 hours I think you will be fine.

OK, I live in Santa Clarita where you start that ride and never knew about it until this year. I was at Bicycle John's in Acton on one of the days of your ride. Looking out toward the desert, it looked like you were getting rained on....ok, DUMPED on. I'm glad to see blue skies in your picture.

I just looked at the map of the course. You are more man that I will ever be! Congrats. Hope you make the cover.

Hey George, I've always enjoyed reading about your cycling adventures. I can't imagine going 500 miles myself. But anyway, I've always wondered: what does red eyed vireo mean?
