No caffeine for me prior to a ride, bad things happen. I do use Hammer Gels with caffeine sparingly once under way.

Info for your next club ride..
John Howard says part of his strategy for winning the Pan-Am games road medal in 1971 was sucking down a 1/2 full water bottle with a mixture of 50/50 coffee and cognac with around 10 miles left to the finish line. He broke away for the win. Later, when dissecting his win
he said that had he taken that bottle earlier he would have lost. About 10 miles out was the optimal distance for a performance boost..

Coffee acting as a diuretic is a myth. Coffee as a laxative not so much.

I do it for this very reason. It allows me to start my ride feeling superlight and relieved and avoid the eventuality of having to go mid-ride. The kick from caffeine also helps.

It doesn't cause dehydration while used during exercise. I'm too lazy to cite the study, but it's pretty extensively supported.

Here's 2 more that are fun to read up on:
Sugar highs are a misconception.
Eating turkey won't make you sleepier than eating chicken.

this one i've heard before. i read a study a while back that found that the levels of tryptophan present in turkey are not enough to elicit a reaction. the reason exhaustion is experienced after consuming turkey (especially on thanksgiving) is due to the quantity consumed and not the tryptophan.
i'm certainly going to read up. thanks.
