So what's the deal with BikesDirect?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So what's the deal with BikesDirect?

I found this site the other day, and I'm trying to figure out the catch. Why did my Felt Z100 with Sora groupset cost $800 (not complaining at all, I love the bike) while I can get this bike with an Ultegra groupset for $900? (https://bikesdirect.com/products/windsor/knight_x.htm) Are they compromising on the frame, fork, etc. to cut down on the cost? Is it basically a good groupset attached to an otherwise piece of crap bike? I'm just wondering, since it seems too good to be true (and you know what they say about that )

EDIT: Whoops, just noticed that the one at that link isn't a full Ultegra groupset- looks to be just the shifters/derailleurs. Even still though, isn't that a pretty good price?

That depends. Are you going to build and service the bike yourself, or pay a shop to build and service it for you?

Bikes Direct - where you can buy a bike direct from the guy who purchased the name rights to a bunch of old school brands and then tries to sell you on the idea that these new frames carry on the quality and heritage of the old ones.

In the direct response world, its called yell and sell.

Still....worthy of checking out.

Bikes direct...run by old time wheeler & dealer Mike Spratt. I remember him from my days at Univega (owned by Ben Lawee the original Motobecane importer). Bikes are definitely cheaper. No R & D in this operation so the performance of their frames will always be one step behind the big boys. Also, sometimes cheaper components in places not likely to attract as much notice (headsets, saddles, seatposts b/b etc.) But consumer reviews are generally positive. Bikes may be a touch heavy..One big reason the bikes are cheaper is due to no advertising/marketing. Also, no dealer network. So that cuts out a slice that the consumer would normally pay.

That's about right. The Ti bikes he is selling are about the best bargain on the website, I own a Motobecane Fly Ti hard tail, he is sourcing these from a great Taiwanese factory who makes very high quality frames, you can buy a quality Ti road or MTB for half the price of what's generally out there.

Don't feel bad about it OP. On any forum there's usuallly one or two issues that have been debated a million times with highly polarised participants, that no-one really wants to see exhumed yet again. You were unlucky enough to pick one of them.

If you drink champagne (upon occasion of your next palmares) use the same strategy. Go to the best wine shop in your area, ask for
the same kind of quality you'd find in a highly advertised brand like Veuve Clicquot, Moet etc. You will be led to "small producers" with much smaller prices.

They're too busy pointing out potholes...or admiring their own guads.

And why don't cagers wave at each other? I mean, we all are sharing a similar experience at the same time...why not wave at each other?

And this relates how to buying a bicycle? You're bragging that you know wine and that's it.

True, but this forum has way more than one or two. Bikesdirect, Campy vs Shimano, how deep a rim to be "aero", rotational mass, weight vs aero, average speeds, common etiquette... just the few that popped into my mind in 10 seconds.
