So what's the deal with BikesDirect?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes Direct - It is what it is. I bought from them. It was the right thing to do at a time when deciding if I wanted to get into cycling more seriously than occasional.

Good bikes with decent components. Do a search and folks on this forum like their CF bike, the Motobecane Immortal. BD is a sponsor of the forum and he's a poster but no one on here is ever steered to buy a bike from them.

To paraphrase, the knowledgeable buyer can get high(er) quality at a lower cost compared to the mainstream to whom brand names market. Bike-to-bike, the OP's Sora Felt versus Windsor Knight comparison is a good example.

I think folks tend to greatly exaggerate the significance of small differences in products. Those cheap Ebay carbon frames, and the name brand components on bustedcarbon.com should give pause to the mainstreamers.

Ratings on Champagnes and the better sparklers tend to be pretty compressed, with little gained for big money (sounds familiar). Drinking Dom isn't remotely life changing. It's hard to beat Domain Ste. Michelle for under $10, and one of the better Californians such as Mumm or Roederer for under $20. I sprang for Nicolas Feuillatte for these holidays cuz I got a good deal, using some of the money I saved on my family's 3 BD bikes.

Im glad there is a new current BD thread now. I have been looking at the Moto Fantom CX for my next bike, as im on a budget. I figure at the price, itll be perfect to use in the snow, then slicks for next year till CX season. The thing I have heard most though, is that when you get a bike, you really wanna give it all the TLC you can, but that's with any new bike. Always wanna make sure bolts are tightened, things are straight and all that jazz. The only diff's i can really see are bikes that are like, 20lbs instead of 17lbs or tube welds showing instead of smoothed out. As long as you check out all the specs and things, I think you can find some real gems!

OP, there is nothing wrong with BD. Some people prefer to buy from local dealers vice huge mega stores. If you are new to biking and not sure you want to plunk down a huge bag of cash for a "decent" road bike, you can get similar bikes for much less on BD. If you are new to the sport, you will have to factor in the cost of having a dealer assemble you bike when it arrives, which might negate any savings you get from BD. Most local bike dealers include free adjustments and service when you buy from them, which is another factor to think about. As a newbie you don't need the "latest and greatest" in components and frames. You don't need a $3000 16lb bike with $300 pedals and a $400 carbon handlebar and seat post.

I was ready to buy from BD, but my local dealer had a great sale with a lifetime service contract, 10% military discount and 10% store credit and all that so I bought local, plus I got to take the bike home that day. But don't let anyone here make you believe BD is some kind of evil. The important thing is that you get a bike you can afford and get out on the road.

Got to agree with this. I've got a brand new CF bike but also two 10 year old steel roadies. Considering a BD bike for a winter ride. I see no legitimate reason to avoid them is they offer the best deal for what you need.

Might as well throw in "The Rivendell philosophy is correct and everyone else is wrong", "why steel is the best frame material" and "wearing underwear under bike shorts" to make it a truly epic thread.

Hmm, maybe because it's a discussion forum ?

I don't see why people get annoyed with reoccurring threads when they have the choice of not reading them

And before anyone projects, I have owned a BD bike, and I still own a BD bike. I researched them myself because I don't think others should do my research for me, and I don't bother asking questions that have been answered ad nauseam.
