Weekend Cycling/Exercise - First Weekend of December

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Exercise - First Weekend of December

It's the first weekend of December, and here in Australia that means that it is the first weekend of summer. True to form ... it is hot. How is it where you live?

Rowan and I signed up for 400K randonnee this weekend. That's 400K to be completed in 27 hours, including all breaks.

But we made an interesting discovery. The tandem we've been borrowing has a maximum comfort limit of 310 km ... and that's where we called it a day after 19.5 hours on the bicycle. The 30C (86F) atmospheric temperature (and 40C (104F) on-road temperature) during the day didn't particularly help matters either.

310 km is, however, the longest we've ridden on the tandem, and the longest I've ridden since 2007.

We need to get a tandem that fits better and is a better material for long distance riding ... and I want to continue to build up my fitness so I can do that sort of distance on a single.

More detailed story here: https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...tury-Challenge

How about you ... how was your weekend cycling?

Had a leisurely 200k brevet today. It was cool and windy, left about sunup, got in a little after dark. 11:15 or so total time. One of our riders was down from Alaska. I think we had 18 people out. And I'll probably ride down to White Rock Lake tomorrow, a nice urbanized 27 mile route.

Nice little 49 miler on the trail. Just replaced a cable on the tandem so figured we'd check it out, worked well haha. Really strange but 3 bikes, 3 broken rear shifter cables in two weeks. Oh well, all new cables now so all are back in good shape.

Started the ride with El Monarcha but quickly ran into Alex2 near Imperial. He rode back with us to Weir then to the coast. Cold morning, each mile felt like I had just gotten out of bed. Gina said she felt the same way. A few rain drops here and there but not enough to get us wet. Ran into Octico and his son Gabe at the Leaky Fountain. Plus Julie at the coast. Lady is on schedule for a 13,000 mile year, WOW!

48.5 miles Saturday, 27 Sunday. The weather was mostly sunny and brisk, windy both days (~45 F). I pushed pretty hard against the wind, and my quads are reminding me of that this morning.

It's starting to get cold here in New England, low to mid 30's (F) all weekend. I got out for about an hour each day, but that was about it. I need to get a balaclava or something to keep my face warm in this weather; my body is nice and toasty, it's really just my face and ears that feel the cold.

38 miles on Saturday, sunny and 40F, 28 miles on SUnday, cloudy and 33F, my fingers hurt so bad I cut the ride short. My 2 year old Pearl Izumi Amfib gloves with chemical hand warmers inside aren't cutting it, I'm looking for other solutions. Other than my hands, I was comfortable enough to continue, but I just couldn't stand the pain (I know, HTFU).

Would have liked to have ridden this weekend. Bad back so I could barely crawl out of bed =( Temps were in the 50's in the morn and topped around 75 saturday. Sunday a bried rain in the am then stiff winds all day as a cold front pushed through. Should be in the 30's-40's in the am and 50's-60's at night. GREAT riding weather. I think I'll just load up on vicodin and ride like hell!!!!!!!
