Cateye computers: BOOOO!!!

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cateye computers: BOOOO!!!

I'm on my third Cateye computer and it's got the exact same problem as the other two. My first one was wired and after I put a few hundred miles on it, it would just occasionally cut out for a few seconds at a time until one day it stopped working altogether so I chucked it.

I went out and bought a Cateye Strada wireless. It worked great until it started doing the exact same thing. I'd be at a steady pace and for a few seconds it would say 0mph and 0 cadence and then jump back up to where it should be until one day it just wouldn't sync with the sensor at all. The shop I bought it from played around with it for a few minutes and decided to replace it with a brand new one. From day one it's been cutting out. In an hour on the trainer it generally cuts out a total of two to three minutes from my ride.

Anyone else have similar problems with their products or is this just my bad luck?

I've got a Strada wireless and I haven't had any problems with it. The only time it cut out is when I bumped the magnet when airing the tires one time. Other than that, I can say it has done what was advertised - for me.

7 year-old wired Cateye that has been sitting on my beater bike outside in the elements (albeit SoCal elements) with zero problems.

Replaced a wired Cateye (had zero problems) 2 years ago with a wireless Strada. Aside from a battery change, no issues.

I used a Cateye and after a year, it started showing crazy numbers, like 35 mph when it's really about 18. So I tried a Sigma, recently it started to blank out every once in a while.

I use a Cateye Double Wireless and have for several years. Except for the frustrating process of resynching the units after changing batteries (partially bad documentation and partially because you just don't do it often enough) its been great. No noticeable dropouts, no interference issues.

I've had the best experiences with Cateye than any other brand. I have them on all my bikes as well as my wife's. The only things I didn't like was one model I brought on sale a few yaers ago didn't have average speed (my fault for not reading) and the cadence sensor on the double wireless model won't fit on the big, curved stay on one CF bike.

You just have bad luck. I have two Strada Doubles (wireless), and one single wireless. All three are great.

I have exactly the same problem with my Strada Cadence Wireless. It's an expensive piece of worthless junk. I replaced the battery and it still doesn't work as often as it does.

If you've been through 3 of them, why do you keep buying them?

The only problem with my Strada Wireless (non-2.4 GHz) was that my headlight's electronics would interfere with it and make it inoperable. I haven't thrown any of my computers away, though.

I wonder what Cateye's response would have been.

All wireless ones stink until you go to a 2.4 Ghz one. They're worth the extra if you don't want something that doesn't get interference.

Yup. Switched to a Blackburn Neuro, which worked well as far as interference is concerned.

That is, unless it un-paired itself from the sensor, then I couldn't remember what button to hold at which display selection to get it to re-pair, and the HR strap wouldn't always work even if I licked it first, and the display was illegible in twilight conditions...

I'm using a Flight Deck right now just because my LBS was liquidating before a move and couldn't wait to get rid of it (plus they had the kit for the 7800 shifters I got from them, too). I could do without wireless in the future, though. I don't even care about HR anymore. I don't need data. I'd rather have just one battery that lasts a long time, so a wired setup is what I'll get if I bother with a new computer (that is, if I don't bring my first wired Strada out of its shoebox retirement home).

Similar isses though maybe not as acute as the OP. My Strata double wireless seems a lot pickier than my Sigma 1606L in relation to magnet sensor position. The Strata is a bit of a battery pig which is to be expected doing double transmitting duty. Also, it doesn't work worth a damn below 0 degrees C.

Hmmm, Garmin may be the next computer.

FWIW, anytime my ride computers start dropping out I clean the contacts with a pencil eraser. That usually fixes the problem.

Used a Mity 8 for a couple years with no trouble, and now have an Adventure, which is great. Absolutely no problems. I'm not in love with the spoke magnets they use, but they work, so I can't complain too much.

I just assumed the first one was cheap so you get what you pay for. When I upgraded to wireless, the LBS only had Cateye. The third was a free replacement.

I used a Cateye V2C for a while (until I decided I needed a HRM - got a Garmin). No issues whatsoever. IMO a great unit for what it was sold to do.

And shouldn't that be "Cateye computers: HISSSS!!!"?
