Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I don't think I want to pay $200 to ride on roads I've ridden 1000x for free.

Much as I enjoyed the sportive I did this year, I have to agree they are gigantic fredfests. In the starting crowd, I was next to a husband and wife in identical kit on identical bikes with identical tape and tyre colours. They were like Tweedledee and Tweedledum.

I would love to have seen pcad's reaction to that sight. I just made polite chit chat with the nice couple rather than the tirade of insults I wanted to unleash.

Isn't the $200 for the support, not the roads? You could still ride them for free, just stay away from the food and the SAG wagons.

Well you're in luck then because as chance would have it, you would be next to 8,000 anonymous cyclists with identical kits on for this one...

It's a good thing the internet doesn't suffer under the stringent politeness rules imposed on real life.

I hope it works out as well, it's just the price tag to ride around areas I've already ridden through numerous times that has me reconsidering.

The $195 includes a jersey, too. That still makes it pretty steep for a Century Ride.

"Included in the entry fee is a professionally designed cycling jersey, which is mandatory apparel for the event."
Whoa, that would be a fredfest. They should go ahead and require the same bike and same hair color, etc. It'd be like the Oompa Loompas.

They've pulled off Gran Fondos in other parts of the country, but good organization and the ratio of experienced riders vs noobs will determine how good or bad a ride it is. I would not want to be stuck in a pack filled with hipsters on fixies trying to tack up a hill, or speed sensitive joy riders who get spooked by someone passing them.
