Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help for a friend - italian steel

Dudes,

My friend's wife wants to help him get his dream bike - italian steel with new super record.
He's a great guy, just had twins, looking to get back on the bike to lose the weight br gained during his wife's pregnancy. id like to see if i can help.
I suggested a few, including the colnago master x lite. That, sadly, is too expensive.

His interest came from his first real road bike purchase- a Masi Speciale with 105.

So, im looking for ideas.

(1) vintage steel/ ebay? I dont know enough about vintage steel frames for this (especially fitting modern 11sp SR). He's a 52 i think.

(2) another modern italian steel frame i might not have thought of?

(3) buying a super record group for $1700 or so and helping him put it on the Masi until he can get a new frameset. Id have to check on Compatability...i know nothing of Campy.

So, any help or suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks dudes.

Wait, so you already have a SR 11 group for his frame? What's his budget, then?

There's so many inconsistencies in this story. So $1700 for SR is OK but a Colnago MXL is too expensive?

How about ride the Masi as it is and then get the actual "dream" bike instead of compromising?

Wasn't the Masi name bought by some US marketing company and the bikes now manufactured in Mexico?

Pegoretti, De Rosa Neo Primato, Tommasini X-Fire, Cinelli XCr

Might as well go custom for a "dream" bike.

not bad when you compare the price to modern carbon frames. no big deal to clean those threads.
would have to be "cold set" to accept a 130mm wheel tho.

First his wife is pregnant so he gains weight...then he needs his dream bike to ride? Sounds like your friend is more interested in finding excuses not to ride.

That OLMO is $1300 for just the frame, which is CROMOR

I have no affiliation with Cannondale but you can get an entire Super Six bike with warranty for $2149.
https://www.cannondale.com/usa/usaeng...SuperSix-5-105 and the bike comes in a range of sizes--just saying...

can we stay on topic?

i'll retype this to try and clarify. please either answer the question or don't. i didn't post this to have it picked apart in the usual BF fashion.

first, with respect to the weight gain, his family and work responsibilities increased during her pregnancy, so he wasn't able to ride, and subsequently gained weight.

he has a Masi with 105. He knows it's not a Colnago.
His dream bike is real italian steel + SR. It may differ from your dream bike, but that is irrelevant.
His wife wants to buy him something to help him get closer to that build.
Colnago Master X Light (for example) I am finding online in the $2500 range. This is out of her price range.

So I'm looking into:
(1) other "real" italian steel options
(2) a viable vintage option
(3) recommending that she buy him the SR groupset, which can be had for $1700, if that is closer to her price range. He can get the frameset down the road.

I don't know the specifics but we have a bicycle shop in the Dayton OH area which specializes in Italian bikes. Here is the websight. https://web.me.com/rogersgalaxie67/ip..._products.html

He sells Torelli, De Barnardi, Ciocc, and others. I can't help you with the prices. I own an early 2000's Bianchi Eros with the Reparto Corse frame. It says it was manufactured in Italy but I wouldn't bet on it. Even if you couldn't purchase from Roger, he would be a good source of information.

If I were her, I'd spend the budget on the frame, even if it meant getting just regular Record, or even Chorus.

The real difference btween Record and SR is pretty small.

Moreover, he should have thsi frame for a lifetime and can always upgrade components later, or as they wear out.

She cheaps out on the frame, he'll never really have his dream bike, unless he sells it andgets something else.

Or if you really wanted a classic looking bike, buy a high end steel frame, like the Colnago, and put Athena with the alloy cranks on it.

That way you save about $1500 on the groupset, and the Athena components result in a classic look that goes with a classic steel frame.

If he still wants SR, then next christmas, or Birthday, ebay the Athena group, and put on SR.

I just wouldn't cheap out on the frame of what is supposed to be a dream bike.

Why Italian steel, instead of from some other place? I'm curious...

I definitely agree with this - and that's what i did with my first road bike purchase. put the money into the frameset, saved on the group until later.

thing is, she might not have the money to put into a high end steel frame.
The Colnago is about $2500 and the Cinelli listed above was about $4500.

because that's what he wants. I really don't want to have this turn into a 5-page discussion about the merits of various countries of origin.

Guerciotti Record Strada? $530
https://www.totalcycling.com/index.ph...urrency&id=USD
Torelli Corsa Strada? $800
https://www.goestores.com/catalog.asp...&DeptID=258177

I don't know if these are any good, or actually made in Italy ( I believe they are ) but there you go. (If he wants SR, that's what he wants, though I'd think Athena would be more than just fine). Who's paying for the wheels etc?

I think these are real Italian steel and maybe worth looking at --- one of the LBS here is a dealer and pointed me toward them as a well-made but reasonably priced Italian steel bike: https://www.torelli.com/frames/torell...sa-strada.html
Good luck

Have you looked at GVH bikes? They have a great selection of Italian steel frames from Colnago, Cinelli, Viner and De Rosa. I bought my Cinelli from them and they were absolutely great.

Why is his wife picking out all the bike parts for the "dream bike" that he is allegedly going to ride?

Figure this out first, then frame Colnago or Cinelli or DeRosa etc, then get Campy Record. Dream bikes cannot be had with counting change - that is why they are 'Dream' bikes. GVH/Tom can set you up with a frame and nicely prepped too, install BB and headset so you'll hang parts in 30 mins and be done.
