Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I can't believe I finally succumbed...

After decades of riding steel frames, and being a dyed-in-the-wool C&V'er...

Today I put a 2010 Tarmac Expert on layaway. So, after the new year, I'll have a brand new bike. I'm worried that I'll never ride my steel again...

I had all steel bikes. Then a couple of years ago I got a full carbon Specialized bike. It's a very very nice bike, but I still love the ride of my steel bikes.

I had been thinking about a new road bike for a long time but hadn't seen anything I liked. I knew I didn't want carbon anything and I really didn't want to go to 10sp.
So of course I ended up with a full carbon bike with Ult 10sp.

congrats!!!

i love my modern aluminum bike but nothing beats a long saturday ride on the steel bike. different tools for different jobs. the best thing i did was install campagnolo 10sp on both of them. swapping wheels and cassette sizes between the two is great.

Fixed it for ya :-)

frpax...I'm not worried...I predict that you will like the Tarmac, but that you will also still be on your steel bike. Its ALL good. Enjoy your new bike!...and your old one!

I ride steel, but it's not because of some "steel is real" mantra. It's just my bike and I like it. If you find you like the carbon bike better than ride it. This is a hobby, not religion.

On one hand....should you really be buying a $2500 bike if you gotta do layaway? Who does layaway?

On the other hand, congrats! You're gonna love the bike. Screw financial responsibility

I've owned and ridden carbon fiber frames. I prefer titanium. Goes really well with steel.

I just bought two 80's steel frames to replace my 2009 Cannondale Six. I just didn't want to ride it as much as I used to want to ride my old bikes - although saying that, one of them was a 2000 Cannondale Criterium...

It's the last of the 2010's, and it has Saxo Bank markings, which is not available in 2011, AND it's my size.
I'm also getting it considerably less than retail... less than what you estimate as well, so it is a really good deal.
So, since I don't have the lump some on me right now and since I've done business at this LBS for 25+ years, we agreed to a layaway arrangement.
Gives me something to look forward to, also.

I'm thinking my next bike will be custom ti. All the 10sp parts for it will come off the carbon bike. I'll keep to steel bike.
