Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

what's your winter project? here's mine.

this year my n+1 collection ended me up with 3 bikes:
- a Felt F3SL with Rival
- a Masi Specaile with 105/Ultegra
- and, unexpectedly, a Felt AR1 frameset from my fiancee as an engagement present.

i rode the F3SL all year, put about 3000 miles on it. love it to death, having 2 carbon Felts is kinda gluttonous.
I never liked using Shimano - so the Masi's components should go. I'm a SRAM.
Also - the Masi came set up a little too soft for my tastes - white cork tape, white cable housings, etc.

So this is what i'm in the middle of:

turns out the Masi's BB is GXP, so the Rival group should transfer over easily.

i disassembled the F3SL frameset, cleaned all the parts completely, and put the frameset up on craigslist.

next step is to disassemble the Masi and transfer the Rival to it. I'm going to rebuild it with my newly-cleaned Rival, throw on a Nashbar carbon fork, black cables and black fixik tape. goal is to make it a (cheap) steel racer.

then the 105 group will go up for sale.

i'm very excited for this. then in the spring, we will all go on bike rides together and get ice cream cones and nobody's ice cream will fall onto the ground, I PROMISE.

I took some quick pics of the box, then of the frame (in case I found some damage later that I didn't catch), inspected/measured the frame and put it back in the box and in the basement. Will take on this one in Jan/Feb.

A custom made Tom Teesdale with all sorts of bits and pieces I have in the basement. Still waiting on the frame - should have it in January.

Doing a load of stuff to the house this winter, so that will be my main project. In my down time, though, I'm going to completely strip and redo my oldest bike, a mid-'80s Trek 520 tourer that I turned into a singlespeed when I got my Atlantis. It's a Reynolds 531 lugged frame that fits me and feels as good as anything I've ever ridden, but I've just used it as a beater and grocery getter for the last three or four years. It's still one of my favorite bikes, and it's going to get torn completely down, checked for rust, Frame Savered, powdercoated (I'm thinking orange, but there's a not-quite-Kawasaki green that appeals to me...) and reassembled with new bearings etc. I may go with old-style three-speed bars for an upright position, and I cannibalized a chainguard off a cruiser in a dumpster the other day that I may try to put on it just for looks..

the Masi project is underway.

Here's how it started - heavy and not so cool.

i let my brother borrow the bike for a century, and he put these huge platform pedals on it. great.
A friend is giving me a carbon fork that he's not using, so that'll be cool. Everything will be black and minimalist. i have to order a FD clamp adapter, and i need a new cable kit. AND, wonderfully, i think the crank bolt has seized and i can't get it to turn.

was going to post a pic but it's kind of "meh" right now.

eBay ftw.

I needed a new cable set and a clamp-on front der.
On amazon/etc, thought I was looking at a good 150 for everything

Nope, found a dude who was selling a new cable kit from his bike for 22 bucks.
And found a clamp adapter for 16 bucks.
Win.

This is for a Vassago Fisticuff, not full on roadie but will be used on the road (going to see if the RK will fit in frame). Most parts are Nashbar which I found is just rebadged, I know the brake lines are Jagwire (says it on cable lol).

Oh and I shoveled snow drifts over 5 feet tall today, that was my day I also went and shoveled my mothers house.

At the peak of Latigo Cyn, a climb in the Santa Monica mountains that starts in Malibu. That's nine miles down the road to the ocean. If you squint, you can see Catalina island on the horizon, right side of the pic. That pic is from this summer, but I was up there this morning, and it looked exactly the same.

I love it up there...

My winter project is getting around to sending my damaged Tarmac frame to Calfee. I stripped off its parts and put them on a spare bike, but I would like to keep the spare for maybe CX. So, I'm going build up my resurrected frame from the ground up . I'll be putting Ultegra 6700 on it with some Easton EC90 Aero wheels and other tidbits. Hopefully I can bring this 19 lb bike down to 16 lb!

I've got to co-ordinate a bunch of guys to design, cost, raise funds and build a 4 wheel pedal cart. Carbon monocoque etc - were going all out.
