cheap tire for the trainer?
Bonktown occasionally has Hutchinson Equinox for $5. Apparently they are the worst tire ever made. But I was thinking of grabbing a couple to burn up on the trainer. They can't leave me stranded in my garage. So why not?
On a side note, I read these are made in france. While I don't believe this makes them better than an asian made tire, I am assuming it makes them more expensive to manufacture. Maybe they are really old stock or something. |
just get the trainer specific tire and save yourself some headache.

Can't speak to that specific tire, but I've found that some tires make better training tires than others. You might not have to worry about being stranded, but some tires throw rubber all over the place or roll really bad, so you might be better off with something else. For $5, you have nothing to lose, but I wouldn't buy a stack of them unless you know you'll like them.

^Are you that lazy? Changing a tire takes ~1 minute.

I find changing tires unpleasant enough that I'd get a spare wheel. I figure if I can spend $100-$300 on a trainer I can spend $150 on a spare wheel.
Disclaimer : I've never ever considered getting a trainer, we just don't get enough snow here for that. |

come to think of it, you can just cut the bead on the trainer tire in a few spots to make it easier to mount. and no, the tire won't blow off even with cut beads. |

Yeah, I guess I am. I don't think I can change a tire in 1 minute, though. Maybe a steel beaded one, but the folders take me longer.
I bought a trainer tire tonight. The thing is a ***** to mount - I almost dislocated a thumb trying to get them on. Decided to just buy another wheel/cassette. |
Just save your old worn out tires and use them on the trainer in the winter. I wear out my Conti GP4000's outside and then use them all winter on the trainer till they are worn right down to the threads. I get at least 1000 trainer miles on each old tire. They don't shed much rubber and work perfect. All for free.
