Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ultegra 6700 vs. SRAM Force, weight, durability, performance etc.

I'm thinking of replacing my 105's with a new group, and I'm debating between Ultegra 6700 & SRAM Force (34/50, 11-28 or 12-27).
What is the difference in weight?
Is there a considerable difference in performance?
What about durability?

What's the 105 doing or not doing that is annoying you?

IMO unless the OP is upgrading from an 8- or 9-speed 105 group, the upgrade probably isn't worth the cost.

Rival performs the same as Force and is still lighter than Ultegra if you want to try out double-tap

+1

Even if you are riding 9 speed (unless your gruppo is totally unfixable) you will see much more from a new wheelset

I don't think the upgrade to Ultegra would be worth it (esp if you are already running 10sp), but I wouldn't blame you for giving SRAM a try. IMHO, my friend's Apex equipped bike has way better shifting characteristics than my full 105 group. I mentioned this in another thread, but I feel the shifting with 105 is extremely vague. Sometimes I can't even tell if I've completed the shift up or down. When I accidentally don't push the shift lever hard enough, the chain doesn't move onto the next cog but I think it does. Then when I get up off the saddle and start to mash down, things start to slip and I've almost eaten it a few times because of this. My friend's Apex equipped bike on the other hand SLAMS into the next gear. You can feel it "clunk" into place and you know you're good to go. My bike also requires frequent RD adjustment, whereas his does not.

I have already decided that my next bike will be either SRAM or Campy equipped. I have no experience with Campy components, but I hear they provide a similar "positive" shifting feel.

Good luck!

Unless your 105 is several years old/or trashed, save your money and buy something that will give you a real benefit (I am currently lusting after the williams 38 wheelset, for example). If your 105 group is 10 speed and works well, I would keep it for now.

But to answer your question I think you will do fine with ultegra OR force, but again I don't think they are a major improvement over 105.

I bought the bride on of those Fuji CX bikes at Performance last year. Full 105, with an Ultegra RD. First off, the bike was a total steal.

Second, the 105 group absolutely kicks butt. Made it through a full race season with only a couple adjustments. This included lots of mud, dust and rain.

I think the stuff feels as good as my Ultegra equipped road bike.

If your for sure gonna upgrade to something i'd go Force simply cause i don't think you'll see a big enough change from 105 to ultegra, unless your running older 9 speed 105. At least with Force you'll get a bit of weight savings if i'm not mistaken and double tap.

I have to say that the 105 I used to ride on my cyclocross bike was pretty good. But I have been a SRAM convert since RED came out few years back. I am committed now to anything SRAM. Force and Rival are amazing values for awesome groups that kill it in the weight department and shifting. Don't get me wrong, I rode Dura Ace for years but SRAM's gear is awesome, and their customer service was top notch. I broke a lever (my own fault) and offered to send it to them so they could see where it failed. Long story short, they sent me a new lever free of charge even when I told them I didn't need one (I had already replaced the lever). Go Rival or Force and you can't go wrong.

Buy an Ultegra crank and save your money.

I like my Rival group, so I'd vote SRAM. You might also consider the apex rear der and cassette since you seem to want some very low ratios.
