Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So what's your complaint ? You don't want to wait that long ? They could do it now since they already have Di2 up and running, but are holding off for some reason ... probably to build anticipation and attract potential buyers away from buying something else.

electronic shifting is insidious. it is their way of taking away the ability of home mechanics to be self sufficient and become reliant on the shop and suppliers for more and more. resist the tentacles of Big Bike.

2012 bikes are already spec'd.

Taichung bike week was a few weeks ago. If Shimano has a new group they are doing an incredible job of keeping it under raps (not counting this article from VN that only quotes a single, unnamed source).

I asked a few people after the last thread about it and no-one had heard. Of course it doesn't mean it ain't so. My guess is Shimano is floating a trail balloon here to see if they should release it. If they do the next chance will be at Taipei show in March for 2012 model year (albeit quite a bit late since assembly factories will have already received their groups - unless Shimano experiences massive delays again).

My guess. Not happening.

Be very afraid of unnamed sources. But this has been talked about almost from the moment Di2 hit the streets. Also, as was mentioned, 2012 bikes start to roll out in late summer. So, if this is true then it would be about August when it makes it out. My only thought is how many customers will buy an Ultegra bike for a bunch more money than now.

I'd want to see it before I'd get all excited.

Like he said. Personally, I don't see the point in doing Ultegra this way.

Man, you must really have a stiffy for electric shifting or something. Take a cold shower.

If Shimano thinks they can extract more dough from the cycling public and make more profit by having an Ultegra Di group, they'll do it. Technically, it's certainly feasible IMO. It's the oldest trick in the marketing books. Introduce new stuff at the high end to extract the most money from early adopters, then move it down to the next tier to extract the most dough from them, and so on until you've maximized what you can extract from it and it has become the norm.

What about a mtn bike Di group? And how long does SRAM want to be left out of the electric shifting market?

"according to industry sources who requested anonymity due to the confidential nature of the information"

To me, that's not vaporware. Vaporware is when the company announces it but never manages to come out with it. When the company refuses to acknowledge the existence of a product because it isn't ready and may not ever be ready, that's just normal R&D.

At some point in the not-too-distant future, 'ol pcad is going to drink the Di2 Kool Aid and then we're all going to rue the day. In a major way.

That's just the way these things go. I'm frankly surprised he hasn't figured that out yet.

Forget that, I want DiTourney. Electronic derailleur control simply has got to be the solution to stamped pot metal cages and plastic bushings. Their Coasting "group" is far too limiting anyway.

For clarification: multiple industry sources confirmed, one gave details. They're all under embargo. Read the whole article, it explains why manufacturers already have tech and specs.

Good work, ZC.

I saw the time on the article: re-edited at 1am on 12/24/2010. That's commitment right there.
