When they powdercoat something, the whole thing gets put into an oven for a couple hours at about 400 degrees (f). It's not like pointing a heat gun at certain parts - the entire frame would need to be "baked".

I had a dream last night that everyone in a certian cycle club had to have the frame this sort of soft purple color. I chose not to join.

Why mess up a perfectly good factory paint job? You're gonna have a lot of work sanding down the existing paint, and i don't think blasting it is an option, with the carbon rear stays. i'd leave it alone...

As you have already discovered powder coating is not the appropriate process. The whole frame would need to be put in the oven to bake.
Beyond that you would be stuck with one continuous color.
The best-looking bikes I have seen are done in what they call fade where one Imron color transitions into another like white to blue.

Unless I'm wrong, you can't powdercoat that bike. It has carbon fiber seat stays. The 400deg heat would ruin them and melt the glue. If your guy puts that in the oven you'll have a real mess on your hand.

I personally like a flat black. But besides this I would be very concerned that it would only cost $100.00. Personally, I would not trust someone that is going to strip the bike properly, prepare the existing paint, and do a good job for that kind of money. What about replacement decals?
It looks good the way it is and it might be more trouble then it's worth.

I suggest you give it some more thought...real hard in fact. You ever see a monochrome $100 powder coat job? They shooting clear over it?...not for $100 they are not. You aren't going to put any decals on it and bury them under a clear coat? If you are to make the bike look decent...more like $300-$400 with clear coat and some minimalist decals. No disrespect, but you are going to ruin your bike. You bought a BMW if not an Acura and you are considering putting an Earl Scheib paint job on it. If exclusivity is what you seek, sell that bike and buy a more exotic bike...or build a bike with an exotic frame and factory paint job....or take the components off your bike and store that frame and build another bike....would be money better spent. What you are going to end up with is a more depreciated, and poorer looking version of what you have which would be a shame.

That's one thing I love about custom steel frames - fit like a glove, you won't see another one in the world, and they aren't that expensive.
Ferrari red is a nice color, or yeah, some sort of dark blue ...

The real problem is getting good decals. I like my bikes to look like a nascar, with stickers all over them
On the silver thing, I reckon silver frames look good hanging on a rack, but they just look like undercoat when they're built up. I had one, and I couldn't get over it
Having said all that, everyone should have a red bike, a dark blue bike, a white bike, and a black bike...SEXY!!

I'd leave it alone for all the reasons mentioned above. Perhaps you could take the "Pimp My Ride" approach by changing the saddle, handlebar tape, cages, tires, etc? It would probably cost less than a good paint job. If you're looking for exclusivity, avoid a metallic gray paint job. It will look like many of the ti bikes out there.
