Garmin 500 data fields

What fields data fields do you use on your Garmin 500?

Here's mine:

With a PM on the trainer / training:
  • Power (3s)
  • Heart Rate
  • Power Zone
  • Time
  • Lap Power

Without a PM on the trainer / training:
  • Heart Rate
  • HR Zone
  • Cadence
  • Time
  • Speed

On the Road:
  • Power (3s)
  • Heart Rate
  • Time of day
  • Speed
  • Distance

Velo Gator 12-29-10 09:57 AM

Road:
First page - Speed, time (elapsed), distance, average MPH, cadence
Second page - Time (of day), HR, calories, tmperature

mzeffex 12-29-10 09:58 AM

I use 3 pages each with 8.. it's busy.

chasmm 12-29-10 10:21 AM

No Power Meter...

Page 1
Speed
Elapsed Time
Distance/Cadence
Avg. Speed/Time of Day

Page 2
Speed
Heart Rate
Distance/Cadence
Grade/Heading

Page 3
Speed
Heart Rate
Distance/Cadence
Tot Ascent/Elevation

grwoolf 12-29-10 11:41 AM

Here's mine (with powermeter)

Page 1:

Pwr. Zone - Pwr. 3s
Speed - Avg. Pwr.
Distance - Heart Rate
Time - Cadence

Page 2 (Identical, but with Lap values for Distance, Time, and Avg Pwr:

Pwr. Zone - Pwr. 3s
Speed - Lap Pwr.
Lap Dist - Heart Rate
Current Lap - Cadence

Page 3 (Misc. and Ride Stats):

Time of Day - Temp
Avg. Speed - Max. Pwr.
Totl Ascent - Avg HR
Kilojoules - Avg Cadence

Some may think this is a little busy with 8 fields, but the font is plenty big and I know where everything is. I find all the information on my main page and lap page pretty useful except maybe "pwr zone". I really wish they had a power zone field that would use the 3sec average.

chadwick 12-29-10 11:48 AM

I mostly ride with:

Power 3s (BIG)!
cadence
current lap time

And then the 2nd screen is:
Time
Speed
Distance
Power 3s
Cadence
Heart Rate
Kilojoules

Page 3 is the built-in one with Vertical Speed, Grade, Distance and Speed... but I never use it since I live on a pancake.

7bmwm3gtr 12-29-10 11:52 AM

Page 1- Instantaneous Data

Page 2 - Averages and Sums

Page 3 - Conditions

My point is that if you're going to train with heart rate, knowing your heart rate is an important thing so it should be on the first page, or at least heart rate zone. If you just have heart rate of there for no reason, then why even wear the strap?

Drew Eckhardt 12-29-10 01:26 PM

I'm not (or... haven't been) HR training.

chasmm 12-29-10 01:43 PM

And since you can set up the pages to scroll, does it really matter which fields are on which page?

fify :p

though honestly, perceived exertion, HR, or Power. Doesn't matter which, the use of some system (less quantitative) is better than none.

jsutkeepspining 12-29-10 02:49 PM

I have a 705:

page one:

time
Heart rate
Speed
Cadence
Distance

And my second page which i use just as much if not more than my first page:

Time
Heart rate
Cadence

achoo 12-29-10 02:58 PM

On my 705:
Page one:
  • Time of day
  • Ride time
  • Distance
  • Speed
  • HR
  • HR zone
  • Cadence
  • 3-second power average
Page two:
  • Lap time
  • Cadence
  • HR
  • 3-second average power
  • Lap average power
I'd like to add HR zone to the second page, but then the lap time field gets a lot smaller and hard to read in the middle of intervals.

Mine is a 705 but what the hell.

Page 1
Time - Speed
Distance - Average Power (3 seconds)
Grade % - Heart Rate
Avg Power - Cadence

Page 2 - set up for intervals
Speed - Current lap time
Laps - Avg Power (3 seconds)
Lap Distance - Heart Rate
Lap Power - Cadence

Mode screen 1 (rarely used)
Avg Speed - Time of Day
Kilojoules - Max Power
MAP

Mode screen 2 (rarely used)
Elevation - Total Ascent
Elevation Graph

psuaero 12-30-10 10:43 AM

I just got one too (Edge 500). I set up three pages (don't remember exactly what's on them right now) specific to the MTB. Are the pages specific to the bike profile? I have three bikes, no compatible power meter (wired Ptap), and one cadence/speed sensor.

RT 12-30-10 11:21 AM

One page only - temp, speed, avg speed, time of day, ride time. No need for other pages/fields as it is all there when you upload to Connect.

I have my second page set up for intervals. It comes in really handy having all of the information right there, especially when you are counting down those final few seconds of hell.

wfrogge 12-30-10 11:48 AM

Power, speed, 3s power, cadence, ride time
